Devolo Wifi Extenders + Nord VPN

I have a number of Devolo DLAN 1200+ powerline/WiFi extenders dotted around the house, and whenever my phone's WiFi connects to a new extender (or the primary router), I lose internet connection until I pause and reconnect Nord VPN via the Nord app.

Anyone got any ideas on how I can solve this?

If I turn off Nord, moving around is seamless, so it seems to be a problem with the VPN.

Things I've tried:
  • Resetting all of the DLAN units and reconnecting them to the router via WPS to clone the exact WiFi settings
  • Forcing all Devolo DLAN units to use the same wifi channel (rather than leaving them on Auto)
  • Turning off 2.4GHz across the entire home network
There aren't many options within the Nord VPN app, so I'm not really sure what I can do on that front. Would changing the 'VPN Protocol' make a difference?

Any help would be appreciated — I missed someone at the door earlier because I was 'disconnected' from the internet and didn't get the notification…

Thanks!

I use the nord vpn app on my android phone. I can move around between APs in the house and track the handoff via the Ubiquiti Wifiman app. It is seamless. I have had it in the past mind, where it would drop before connecting, but that just turned out to be an AP issue and a quick reboot of the AP fixed it.

I'm using the Nord Lynx protocol.

You would think having them on the same channel would be the end of it and allow for seamless roaming.

have you tried uninstalling / reinstalling the Nord app? Have you got another phone / different model to try it on in case it is a phone issue? Or do you have a laptop you can install Nord on and move around with the laptop and see if the same issue occurs as the phone?

I guess also, moving away from powerline to a mesh system would be something to potentially consider.

I should have said, this is with an iPhone.

I've just reinstalled the app and set it to NordLynx rather than Auto, so I'll see if that makes a difference.

And while I don't have another phone to test, I will get the laptop out and start walking about the house.

Oh, and all the APs are updated with the latest firmware and have Mesh enabled if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the swift reply.

Nice. OK, see how you get on with the phone and laptop. Fingers crossed!

It's been a while as I was away for work, but I have more information:

I can replicate the issue with my laptop (Macbook Pro) so it's not just a problem with my phone.

I have four Devolo APs dotted around the house. If I move straight from one AP to another, it works fine. The problem only occurs if I switch from a Devolo AP to the primary router (or back again). At which point, I have to disable and/or re-connect Nord VPN before my internet access returns.

What's annoying is the WiFi and internet status remains 'connected' so sometimes I can miss that I'm not actually online, and emails/WhatsApp messages haven't come through.

The router in question is an Intellifi SDG 8600 Series provided by my ISP. Within the dashboard, there's an option to add Intellifi Satellites via MAC address. However, if I try to add the Devolo AP's MAC addresses it won't recognise them.

My ISP want's to charge a subscription for additional Mesh WiFi boosters, which I'm loath to do and I'd like to avoid replacing all of the Devolo APs if possible.

Anyone got any bright ideas?

I don’t want to tempt fate, but I might have cracked it.

Even though Mesh was enabled on the APs, fast roaming was off. I’ve just enabled it and it seems to be working.

Not sure why it was off and why I didn’t notice it before.

Keep your fingers crossed and thanks again for the help and swift replies.
