I have a secondhand router DG834GT that I am trying to setup for the first time and am having trouble.

As I am a noob to routers I do not know what I am supposed to be doing without proper manuals.

After pluggin in the device I try and enter the settings by typing in the default gateway address.

Question: Do I need to be online to do this or is this supposed to be from off line?

When I try offline it tries to connect through my old modem. Is this supposed to be uninstalled first?

Am i Supposed to start from the beginning like I dont have a network at all?

Thanks

I would remove all old devices and software before installing your new stuff. Fist off then, your computer needs to be linked to your router, so you can set everything up. ie drivers and utilities ;)

It will then walk you through the processs, and you can configure everything as you go along :)

Disconnect your existing modem/router completely to start with.

Plug the router into the mains (don't worry about ethernet or ADSL for now) then get a paper clip or something that'll hold the reset button in on the back for a few seconds. This will return it to default settings.

Then go to Control Panel, Network Connections and you should see a Local Area Connection there which will be your PC's ethernet device. Plug the ethernet cable in from your PC to the router and then you should see an icon next to the clock appear for a few seconds - something like a small PC icon with two little dots moving about. Hopefully this will vanish after a few seconds.

If that is the case, double-click on your Local Area Connection and click on the Support tab. You should hopefully have an IP address that begins with 192.168.0.x. If this is the case then you will be able to connect to 192.168.0.1 in a web browser.

See if you can get this far before going any further.

Why are you still using your old modem

I dont know why im using old modem. I thought I had to have it installed to access the net when trying to connect to the router?

Didnt want to uninstall everything, then find it doesnt work, reinstall everything again then go on here to see what im doing wrong. :D

Ill try your suggestions

Thanks, be back in a minute hopefully

Well you don't need to be able to access the net to configure your router. Your router sits on your internal network so you can access it regardless of whether or not there is an Internet connection available.

Still having trouble with this.

Uninstalled everything. Plugged in the router. But when I try and enter the username and password for the router settings this does not accept this.

Tried resetting the device but this does not work still. Any suggestions?

The router that I am using is an old Sky router and I am using tiscali(Yes i know they bad) does that matter? Do these routers only work with sky?

Please help

Snap! They are locked to Sky, but I think there is a way to unlock them, iirc.

Not personally. Although a quick Google suggests that flashing the firmware with a non-Sky one might do it.

So what would you suggest that I do?

Download that firmware? (IF so which one?) - then uninstall my current modem and then try plugging in and running file - then trying to go into the router settings again?

Thanks by the way

Yea, although you shouldn't need to uninstall, just unplug, plug in the router and then navigate to the web interface.

You need to upload it to the router via the web interface, there should be an upgrade option along the menu, sorry, should have said that before. :/
