DH501LJ Vibration/Noise

I've just installed a Samsung 500GB and am less than impressed with with vibrations it generates when idle. The whole case seems to be amplifying this vibration and can be heard across the room. I've done a comparison with a WD AAKS and although the access noise is louder on the WD it doesn't have the constant background throbbing noise. I've now replaced the Samsung with the WD and it's a lot quieter (apart from when accessing the drive).

Looking around the net I've seen few comments on this Samsung vibrational noise. Is this a common issue or have I got a duff unbalanced platter?

i have a couple of sammys and yes, they do emit a throbbing noise of sorts

If you mount it in a 5.25" bay with rubber mounts that will probably stop the vibration, my raptor is silent in its Zalman enclosure with rubber mounts, you can get the rubber mounts without the enclosure which works out a lot cheaper. I have a noisy drive as well, only figured out that it was the drive making the racket when I enabled HDD spindown.

Looks like I'll have to try it in my WHS server (mounted in a Lian EX-33) and see if I can still hear it ...

Have you tried the elastic band mod ?
