DHCP Issues

Hi all,

I have 2 routers at home, a Billion 7800N (192.168.1.1) and a Netgear DGND3700v2 (192.168.1.2) . The 7800N is connected to the phone line (get 7meg sync speed on it, the netgear can only manage 5) and the Netgear is used as WAP.

The network looks like this:

Code:
        Wireless Devices Wired Devices Wireless Devices
                 |                |                  |
Internet -----> 7800N -----> Switch -----> Netgear Router

I currently have the 7800N configured as DHCP (netgear has this disabled) However I am having a few issues with devices not getting their address properly.

So I was wondering If I could switch the dhcp server to be on the netgear as this seems to give out ip address' just fine. However I can't seem to see an option that enables the netgear to give out the default gateway as the billion.

Is there anyway to do this?

If not how can I sort out the billion not giving out address'?

Cheers

Ali

What port on the netgear do you have plugged in, i had a similar problem, using a router as a WAP, i had the cable plugged into the WAN port, when it should be put into one of the LAN ports. Have a quick check because i was a bit miffed because of that.

Is the netgear WAP an extension of the 7800N's SSID or is it a completely different connection?

Keep the dhcp disabled on the wap.

Why do you need the switch? Why not use the wap for wired access as well?

Try bypass the switch and see if you get an ip from the billion through wap or wired.

I have the switch because I don't have enough ethernet ports on the wap. I have a few serves and NICS for my ESXi box.

It's exactly the same SSID and password. Definitely plugged into a LAN port.

It does seem to be giving out ips now but really slowly so some clients time out

Can you put the switch after the wap?

Internet -----> 7800N -----> Netgear Router -----> Switch

or even like this

Internet -----> 7800N -----> Switch
Internet -----> 7800N -----> Netgear Router

ie run both the switch and router from the 7800, you may be creating a loop with the switch.

Router and WAP should be on different channels such that they don't overlap i.e.say 3&9. Download inSSIDer to see what's going on nearby.
