Diagnostic code readers

Don't buy that, it's too expensive.

Buy that and install some free software on a laptop I use something called "learning view" (google it) but it maybe Subaru only.

This is what I use for my Subaru as I decatted my car, and the engine management light comes on about once a week due to no cat, I do check for any other ECU error codes, and if none other than the lack of cat code. I reset my ECU usign it and start again :)

It did also identify the fault when the MAF sensor failed on my car.

I recently bought a hand held reader for 15 inc delivery, just have a look around. I have yet to try it though. I believe it will reset the ecu as well.

Cable and laptop is a good idea as well.

My dad has the CReader V which we've used on numerous different cars with no problems at all. Decent sized screen and easy to use.

The VAG Com cables are ok for a cheap and cheerful solution if you actually have a VAG car, but IME the software is either free but limited, cracked or quite expensive to buy and they aren't always the most reliable things (especially the cheap Chinese clones).

I have a Launch X431, cost a few quid but works with most cars and is brilliant!

Obviously due to the cost of the unit, I wouldn't recommend it unless you run a business or want to sideline diagnostic reading!

I charge people a fiver to scan/clear their fault codes at work so i know which cars do and don't work. i like the realtime scan charts too, such as timing, coolant temp etc is very nice for a standalone reader.

I am buying a used car soon and was considering getting one of these just to check if there are any error codes on the car before buying. Is this a good idea? I am hoping to buy an Alfa Romeo 147.
