So after a rather interesting debate in the office about taking presents back, someone then asked about dialling 999 in an emergency.

Someone has raised the point of you should dial 112 instead as the emergency services can track you via satellite through the 112 number, but they can't if you dial 999.

Anyone offer any real substance to this? A quick Google search doesn't really enlighten me much.

Load of rubbish tbh. How could they track you via satellite using a standard phone line?

Especially if you think they cn track a landline easily anyway and via triangulation when using a mobile.

112 is the international emergency number.
They can't 'track' you though satellites, they could triangulate your position but that's about it. Unless you have GPS in your phone or what not.

I thought it was the same thing.. obviously 999 would suck if that button was broke.

I also love how they chose the longest combination for those old rotary dial phones. --------9 ticktickticktickticktickticktick --------9 ticktickticktickticktickticktick --------9

They are exactly the same centre. Person is talking tosh.

999 is UK
112 as stated, is European.

That was so you couldn't accidently dial it ;)

so that it was the hardest number to dial by mistake

Whats the number you ring again when its not an emergency but you still want police or an ambulance, fire brigade. To a lesser degree. ie: Cat stuck in a tree, rather than baby stuck in a burning house.

edit, haha Tefal.

Upon further questioning she now thinks that the person that told her this nugget of information was at a police speed awareness class.
