I was using this drive in an external icybox sata enclosure but I've now put it in another machine to use. The properties box shows that there is 36 GB space being used but there is only 1 file on it. There are some files on it that I want to copy before I format it. I could see them last week when I used it last but no more. I've used the maxtor tools and it says it's all ok but I still can't see the files that I know are on there! I've also put it back in the external box but that doesn't work either. Any ideas or has the drive died?

Ran diskkeeper and it shows the files moving but I still can't see them in windows :( Might have to format as a last resort!

If the drive is visible as a properly formatted volume in the new PC then it could be a permissions issue. Have you tried accessing it as an administrator level ID with "show hidden files" turned on?

Tried that and no joy. Really strange cos it all shows up ok but I just can't see the files.

That is a bit odd. Can you confirm a few basics just so I'm on the same page.

The drive appears in My Computer fine?

When you right click on it and pick properties it shows the filesystem correctly with 36Gb or so used?

If you open it up nothing is displayed?

Can you use the disk normally, create & delete files etc?

Have you tried downloading a disk usage tool like TreeSize Pro to see if that will tell you where the used space is?

That's right. It shows 36Gb space is being used but I can only see 1 file and that's only 700Mb. I'll try the TreeSize Pro tool when I get home from work to see if it tells me anything else. I've copied files to the hdd and they were ok so it's a bit baffling!
