Diary of a wimpy kid aged 37 and 3/4

Squat

2 x 5 x 20kg (bar only warm up)
1 x 5 x 40kg
5 x 5 x 55kg

A few ropey reps in there but not to bad overall. Was certainly on the limit for the last set but push through.

Bench press

1 x 5 x 20kg warmup
1 x 5 x 20kg
5 x 5 x 35kg (program)

Ok - pushing hard for last set.

Barbell Row

5 x 5 x 40kg

Back at it - hoping for wednesday/friday this week so should be back to previous by end of the week.
 
Must be something about turning 38 that makes the gym feel fantastic!

Just felt great today - everything was good for a change!!

Squats

5 x 5 x 57.5kg

Tried working hard on knees out on the way down and also holding my breath for the full squat up and down. That seemed to keep my core nice and steady. Felt good and taking a small 2 second pause to get a breath at the top of each rep seemed to work wonders. Very pleased with these today.


Overhead Press

25kg - 5,5,5,5,5

All ok - felt the last set but happy with these.

Deadlift

1 x 5 x 75kg (program)
1 x 5 x 80kg
1 x 1 x 90kg
1 x 1 x 100kg

Blimey!!! Chuffed to bits with that one! Was feeling good so just decided for the first time to see what RM i could do. Was absolutely chuffed with the three figures (100). Felt ok, really driving the legs up and keeping the back straight.

10 mins warm down on the bike.

With squats I find I can pump out the first 4 reps very easily and then have to pause, do another 2, pause again and do the final 2. I still haven't worked out whether the 'butt up' technique is better than the heel push and 'spread floor' one. I do know that rolling the hip ligament insertions first and then stretching the hips is a good recipe for success.
 
3 sessions this week - pleased with that.

Decent working sets - a little twinge in the left knee but I've had issues with my knees for 20 odd years so this is nothing new. Will keep an eye on it.

Bench press

5 x 5 x 37.5kg (program)

Ok - pushing hard for last set.

Barbell Row

5 x 5 x 42.5kg

Ok here as well.

Onwards and upwards!

Also 22.5kg more than a previous Britains Got Talent winner could manage this morning in the gym ;);)

Deadlift

1 x 5 x 85kg extra

All good - need to keep any eye my left knee but it something I've managed for years and years.

Gym done, school run done, down to work now!:D

Right on the limit for last couple of sets - ropey form in the last one but got there. I suspect I will be seriously struggling for 65kg next time round and also with a family break away coming up, likely to be out the gym for 7 days at least.

Overhead Press

Still absolutely hate this - have no strength in the shoulders

27.5kg - 5,5,5,5,5 (just on the last 2 reps!)


Deadlift

1 x 5 x 50kg
1 x 5 x 60kg
1 x 5 x 75kg (as per program)
1 x 5 x 80kg

Very pleased with deads - form remains good and there is a bit still there. Next one will be over my own bodyweight so will be chuffed if that happens.

Legs are like rubber now mind you

You doing 27.5 in each hand with dumbbells or 27.5 total with the bar?
 
I suggest you try shoulder press with dumbbells purely because you're forced to stabilize the dumbbells too which give you a more thorough exercise :)
 
Another week of illness - i'm never ill but seem to have colds/bugs etc loads in the last 8 weeks or so. Really dodgy stomach for about 4 days but finally seems to have cleared.

Anyway - busy work today /tomorrow so back to gym on Wednesday hopefully, but tonight done some turbo trainer in the house. Cardio shocker!!

Back soon at the weights I promise!
 
MIA!!

Been super busy with work and family and still can't shake a stupid cold/cough etc. Been out running a little bit but struggling to find time for gym at the moment. Will be back soon I hope!
