Did anyone live at home for uni?

haha, yeah, be warned, you WILL put on lots of weight in your first year.

beer, kebabs, pizza, hall food... your belly will never forgive you :p

Not necessarily, I ate VERY well, subways, nandos, hall food, chips, tesco sandwiches, lots of ice cream what not, minus alcohol I maintained within 1kg of my original weight and reduced bodyfat;)

You could afford to eat subway and nandos with student funds  gonna see how much i can afford to splash out :D

I stayed at Uni halls (it was alrite - I hated the loud noise by drunk students and music being played through the night). Changed University and stayed at home for a year. It was OK. Wouldn't do it again - however I did save quite abit. Will be moving out in a house of 3 in a few months. Now that should be awesome. :)

Suppose music thru night could be a problem, not allowed it on loud past 11 at a lot of places though.

I'd just report em if it was crap music :p

what about staying at home for the first year then moving out and living in huddersfield with some friends second year?

thats exactly what i did, moved in with people i met on my course. was a great idea if they didnt turn out to be *woah - didnt notice my own swearie!*.

also meant i built up funds from not having to spend much of my loan form the first year! meant living away was soo much easier!

are you glad you did that?

get out of the house, it is WELL worth it imho, you learn more about life and everything if your out of the cradle.

DO NOT LIVE AT HOME. otherwise you might as well just be going to college again. if you're "going" to uni, you might as well actually GO!

I spent rather a lot on 'good' food. All those restaurants and bills well into the double figures:( Although it really does depend on your location. The 24 hour subway was conveniently on the corner of Oxford St, on the way home from leicester square, so it was hard to not spend £5 on food at 3.30am when you are absolutely starving.

I don't think it matters that much. Life is what you make it whether at home or away. If you are desperate to move away and think that's the only way you can have fun then there is something wrong at home. Don't you people have friends? :p

I stayed at home for uni but the only way I would move is if my friends were going to the same university or same area. One of my friends went away for the first year and came back because it wasn't as fun.

Judging by the sort of people on my course at uni, I would hate to have to live with them all the time. Way to many geeks, losers, goths, emos, blacks :p, etc. Probably because it's law tbh. There are some good friends i've made but nothing compared to the people i've known for 15 years, who live within 5 minutes of my house.

I can do everything i would away from home, some of my friends have their own flats, but don't have to bother with washing clothes and buying food (properly) or being as poor.

I'm sure being away has its advantages but i would be giving up on too much. I want the least amount of responsibility for the longest amount of time. There's plenty of time to grow up.

I think i'm only going to be living away from home for the first year, the cost is just  I don't like the idea of having £3k a year rent plus bills and food on top of £9k worth of tuition fees for the full 3 years (damn the 'New System') :'(

I'm gonna see through this year and then decide later what to do next year, your right the tuition fees and rent are a lot but is it worth it in the end.

I just dont fancy getting up and getting a busy train to University and then home again aswell. I'd probably spend asmuch on bus/train fare as i would living in halls ><

I lost ~10% of my bodyweight in my first year. Simply much more active up there.

Andr3w; you can go to University from home, it will work, you will not be a total pariah, but you will miss out on so much of what is great about going to University. Leaving your home and living on your own forces you to mature dramatically and I don’t think there’s realistically any better time to do it in your life than when you are surrounded by great friends all doing exactly the same thing (also taking their first bold steps to independence)! I’m personally of the view that if you don’t make a clear enough cut you won’t settle in properly at University and will end up falling back on home. Certainly for me it has been one of the best things that I have ever done.

It bears no reflection on the quality of life, parenting, and so on that you have at home; from my perspective seeing your kids strive out on their own (and allowing them to do so) is one of the best things people can enjoy in this life.

Either way – don’t get stressed about it.

if i paid for it myself i wouldnt be able to afford it, as my parents earn too much i dont think i can get more than £1000 or something, thats what my sister got

Not so. If you show them that your parents aren't supporting you, you get more loan.
Its perfectly possible to get by on a loan and summer jobs. A lot of people work during term too, but tbh I dont have time. (Well, I'm not willing to give it up :P)

I have a few friends here who live in the city and came to uni here. One of my best friends in first year was on my corridor but lived only about 5 mins away - he moved back in with his parents after making lots of friends in the first year, and just takes turns going around everyone else's houses now. Maybe you could do something like that? :)
