Did I break my Mobo/CPU/RAM during CPU cooler install?

That's lucky but windows update a may have sent microcode which has affected it.

Have you updated the bios yet ?

I had been installing Windows updates in the hours before I switched CPU coolers, so maybe that had an impact.

Not yet, I plan on taking everything out of the case and putting it together on top of the motherboard box to try and eliminate as much as I can. I also have the same motherboard arriving tomorrow that I am borrowing. I cannot do much today due to work, but hopefully tomorrow I can get to the bottom of it. Thanks for your help.

OK so I switched the mobos around and I get the same DRAM orange LED issue, which leads me to believe I must have done something to the CPU when switching the cooler around maybe. I am going to try and update the BIOS on the motherboards tomorrow and see if that makes any difference, but bearing in mind I was running Windows fine for 2-3 days without any issue I cannot see it being the BIOS. Worth a shot though. I guess I will then need to test the CPU somehow, probably by sending it back to the retailer. Ugh.

One thing I have noticed is that the CPU led does not flash at all - the DRAM amber light comes on and nothing else happens to the other LEDs. I have tried different RAM sticks - three different RAM sticks that all work in other builds to no avail. I am thinking something went wrong with the CPU, or perhaps a PSU power cable got knocked during CPU cooler install and no longer works.

OK so I updated the BIOS and....

This is on the motherboard I am borrowing so not 100% definitely the issue but fingers crossed on updating my other motherboard I get the same response. I also have not pressed F1 yet, so maybe there will still be an issue - definite progress though.

Thank you to mickyflinn for the BIOS suggestion and mentioning the Windows update, I would never have thought it might be a BIOS issue as it had worked fine with the current BIOS.

That’s what happens when you update bios. All the setting is wiped and it will be as if the board has been used for the first time. Completely normal.

Yep just booted into Windows without an issue. Now to reinstall my motherboard, update the BIOS and see if it works. It might simply be that the new motherboard needed a BIOS update to recognise the CPU and my motherboard does indeed have an issue. Seems unlikely (hopefully) as they both displayed the same DRAM led issue, so hopefully my motherboard will work the same after a BIOS update too.

Here you go;

Here is the underside of the CPU although that looks OK;

Not the greatest photo of the CPU but there isn't anything on it. Touch wood that hasn't gone as that would be a ball ache to get replaced.

Thermal paste wont cause issues as far as i know, ive seen a few builds with lots of thermal paste leaking onto the board itself.
