Did I do the right thing?

I always used to give 50p or a £1 if I had them going spare to people that asked, BUT...

Was on a work's night out in Blackpool a couple of years ago and a guy in a wheelchair asked me for any spare change. I reached into my pocket and a girl I know grabbed my arm and pulled me away from him before I could give him anything.

I asked her what she did that for and apparently the guy's well known round there- he has a flat and is on benefits but on summer nights goes round the cash machines begging from drunk tourists.

Turned me completely cynical after that, I don't give any money to people begging- but I do buy a copy of the Big Issue when I can (no Halo smiley on here? :p)

Plus, as was said above, you can sometimes tell when it's someone genuinely shy of change for a ticket/phone call and some skank on the scrounge.

Also- some muggers use that as a gauge to see if you've plenty of cash on you

yes you did.
In a city near me people do this all the time, i fell for it once and only once. He asked if i had changed of a £2 coin for the phone box, i said yes and gave it to him and then he walked off and said he'd meet me in town and give me the £2 back. Saw him 3 mins later with a bunch of guys that i would take one look at and think crack heads.

I usually give money to people on the street, when I'm out and see them. I buy The Big Issue and usually give them a few quid extra too. I give money to beggars. I'm better off than they are and a few quid won't matter too much to me but could to them.

You know, if they ask for something like 2p it could be just for a reason to start a fight with you, they can be real hobnobs tbh.
