This week I have played a couple of friendly 6-a-side games (against the same opposition that I sometimes sub for in leagues) on water-based astros. One of the rules that we play to is no slide-tackles.

Yesterday one guy, who was in goal at the time, charged out of his area when I was 1-on-1 and slide tackled which I wasn't too impressed with. He told me **** off for my troubles also. We got on with the rest of the game and it wasn't an issue

But today, whilst outfield he slide-in on me again so I give him verbal and got more back, making out like I was having a go for nothing. All the players on their team were playing it down saying I didn't get injured blah blah, but at least they recognised the foul this time.

A few minutes later this guy let the ball go a bit and I slid in for it. I didn't go for the man, or leave a leg in, or go high or anything like that, but now he was really upset , and his team had a right go at me, plus things like "he [me] doesn't know what a friendly is" as their player has done it more!

I know technically I shouldn't have slid-in, but I didn't have a mind-set ''I'm gonna get him'', and I defintely did no worse to him than the other way round. I felt he was taking liberties so I let him know otherwise.

Justified/Not?

Comments and opinions please.

Well why not play slide tackles, kinda ruins the competitiveness...

For the ims leagues, I think it is a rule because it reduces injuries (which may well help the uni's insurance), and frequently there are no refs for the ims league games so they would be a point for controversy.

for our friendlies we keep the same rules to keep it simple.

Justified yes

I bet he doesn't do it again

He will do it again. Though next time he does make sure he know's it's a mistake. Either make contact following through, or do the same to him.

He does it to you, you do it to him.

Sure Gilly will agree, and he's also a fellow defender, first priority is stopping the man going past you, especially if he has roughed you up before, a little contact won't go a miss.

There is no such thing as a friendly either, you can have a kick around with a few mate's, but if it's a proper game and you play against me. Expect me to take it seriously, thats just in my nature.

Well your both as bad as eachother really. :p

It's banned around here too, we play a league 7 aside game on astroturf. ALl slides are banned and must stay on our feet (other than keepers of course). Which is fine, no issues with that.

We have this in common :)

Definitely :)

I don't even mind forwards giving me a bit of a rough game as long as they don't complain when they get it back. Really annoys me when you play a forward and they want it to be a non-contact sport.

Probably everyone who has ever played footy with me would say I need to agree to this :p

to be fair, water based astros aren't exactly hard though.
I don't know what a water based astro is. You mean the stuff thats like a carpet?

If so then I'd done slideys on that but not at 5-a-side and its like lots of little razor cuts, with a burn thrown into the bargain.

What do you expect if you slide tackle and theres a no slide tackle rule?

I've found that people will often ignore what their own team mates do and complain when something like this happens to them. Your team mates should be backing you up everytime he does it to you and making a fuss and then maybe he'd stop.

Yeah, it's like thick carpet that gets sprayed regularly with water. Ever seen hockey on telly? When they lash the ball and water puffs up? Its that stuff, not just carpet that you might get indoors.

The water reduces the friction between ball/surface, and also take the heat out of would-be burns ;)
