Did I make a mistake SLI'ing my 780?

I bought a second gtx 780 over Christmas as OC had them on sale for a decent price. The main reason I bought it is I figured it would give me a year or 2 more headroom and allow prices of the 980ti to fall to an affordable price. I also want to game at 1440p in the near future. I am becoming increasingly concerned however as I see latest games coming out with high VRAM requirements even at 1080p ultra and I'm worried my 3gb won't be enough. I recently got the GOTY edition of Shadow Of Mordor to stretch my 780's legs a bit and I am seeing on that even at 1080p I am hitting 2950 of my 3000mb VRam being used. Should I sell my 780's while they are still fetching a good price?

Shadow of Mordor is the only game that uses more than 3GB VRAM and is the main reason, Nvidia was caught with their pants down with the GTX970 scandal.

None could have realised the issues with the card, if not for that game.

However, your 2 GTX780s are perfectly fine and more than adequate mate. Grab yourself a Gsync monitor and don't bother about anything else at the moment. Only when there is a single core card that can beat the 2 GTX780s by a good margin.

I would advice you to watercool them also and push them to their limits.

My biggest regret I sold the GTX780Ghz to get a 295X2 instead of buying a Gsync monitor. Not that the 295X2 was bad, on the contrary awesome card, same applies to the watercooled R9 Nano I have now, however I could have saved myself a lot of money on upgrades including Freesync monitor.

I ran sli 780 for a while @ 1440p with no issues.

Mordor is a v ram hog compared to most games, if your having no issues and the fps is good enough then stick with them especially considering you've only had sli for just a month.

LOL, loads of games use more than 3GB at 1080p running max settings. Get your head out of the sand dude!

The new tomb raider for example, uses 4GB at 1080P.

Plus 1080P is commonly known as a peasant resolution for PC gamers, since many have moved onto 1440P and 4K.

Lol I have run a 780Ti for over a year @1440p and never had a vram problem no matter what settings. To me a Vram problem is when the fps grinds to nothing as it caches off the system RAM.

I find it really amusing people say its no good at 1440p. Just because afterburner says its running at 2.7gb on a 3 Gb card does to mean you are low on Ram. The game engine will always try and use as much Vram as it can for caching purposes.

the whole SoM 970 thing is rubbish unless nvidia have entirely fixed the ram with drivers recently. in which case its still rubbish.

I played through the whole game @ 2560x1080 and didnt see any ram related issues. no stuttering whatsoever. none. Not even after i installed the HD texture pack, though with everything maxed out the fps was unacceptably low.

I assume using your logic, you look at a games VRAM usage and whatever it shows is what it needs, but this just isn't the case. ROTTR is showing near 7GB being used for me at 1440P but it certainly doesn't need that and I bet someone with a 4GB card can run it just fine with the same settings as me. And 1080P isn't a peasant's resolution at all and the most popular res out there. You really shouldn't be so rude fella.

Hell I run my 970 daily maxed out on Vram by playing Ark survival with no issues, considering this is a "3.5GB" card supposed to slow down when you hit the latter 512mb left I've not seen a wiff of it, from my experience if you have the grunt the Vram doesn't seem to matter as long as you have around 2.5GB to play with on a card. That's from my personal experience playing many games on many cards Your mileage may vary

Thanks for the replies guys, it's helped me make my decision. I am going to keep hold of the 780's, I've had no issues so far, I will put my money into a 1440p g gync as originally planned and play it by ear really. If and when It starts to affect my gaming to a point it is taking away some of the enjoyment or aesthetic then I will move on. Cheers
