LianLi G70 - Help please with 2 questions

So I cancelled my Lian Li A10 order, and ordered myself a G70B. Got it for 135 quid including shipping to Ireland too so did ok. I love the looks of this case and the fact it has no front door.

A couple of quesitons though especially on cooling :

http://www.lian-li.com/Product/Chassis/Server_Full_Tower/Classical/S_C_PC-G70.htm

1. The top fan is an intake and cools the cpu, and hot air is drawn out by the psu fan and side fan, which also exhausts hot air from the gpu area and hard drives. Seeing as I am using a Tuniq Tower and presumably will have to reverse the fan on it to blow in instead of out, will this be an issue, especially as I will probably not be able to use the cpu duct over the tuniq being too tall. Would I be better off reversing the side fan to blow in (like on the Akasa Eclipse), and the top fan to exhuast.

2. Secondly, does anyone know if it is still shipping with no blanking plate for bottom psu area ? There are very little reviews, but one I saw on Overclockerclub showed a blanking plate in the bottom.

Thanks. But since he became a mod I don't see as much posts from him here.
Hopefully he will see my post. Any advice from WJA96 would be much appreciated also.

Hoping this case is going to be up to my Akasa Eclipse standards in terms of cooling but just as important - I need to know what is the best fan setup when using a Tuniq in this case.

<edit>
It looks like this guy has his Tuniq Tower blowing towards the fan in his PSU.
Does this make any sense ? Wouldn't the fan in the Tuniq be pulling hot air off the back of the video card. Presumably he is also using the stock config with the rear fan cooling the cpu also. Maybe I am slow but I am

I still think maybe having the tuniq and rear fan exhausing hot air, and the front fan and side fan as intakes might be better. Especially as the 8800GTX's actually exhaust some of the hot air, and having the side fan pull air instead of push would be working against them. Maybe I am totally off.

Anyone ?

I still read this section just do not reply to everything due to lack of time.

My 4th Hiper Type-R blew on my this morning so just fitting a new load of gear then I will give you a decent reply. :)

Thanks mate.
Your opinions as always are much appreciated.
Sorry to hear about your PSU. I have recently jumped on the Etasis bandwagon and wouldn't look back.

A good excuse to get a Tagan or Seasonic then. ;)

I have no idea - I haven't used one of these but kudos on the price - the lowest I've seen them is £150+delivery. Raikiri might be able to help as he has the G50 which is the cut-down version of this. Build quality on these is not as good as the V-series in my opinion (side panel thickness, side panel locking mechanism, general metal thickness) but it looks gorgeous and it is still better made than 99.9% of the other stuff out there.

Stop shaking them before you fit them then ;) Hiper/Coolermaster seem to have production batches where the QA staff have just gone on holiday or something. Coolermaster bought Hiper because they had established a 1st class brand image. Then they allowed it to be wrecked by sloppy quality control. It would totally put me off Coolermaster to be honest.

Maybe I can help, since I have the Silver PC-G70, and I got mine for pretty much the same price as yourself.

In answer to your questions:

1) This is a difficult one to answer, mainly because I haven't paid much attention to the Airflow in this case. I didn't even know the Rear fan was an intake, not an exhaust until I just double checked the website. Will have to go home and confirm this.

However, I have a major upgrade in the works planned for my case, which involves an oversized PSU bing placed into the bottom PSU slot to leave space for future W/C placed into the top of the PC.

Until then and because of this, I intend to mod the top of the case to have another fan pulling air into the case, have the front fan as an intake and then the GPU/Rear fans as exhausts. I'll be using a Zalman 9700 and a zalman VF-900 for my CPU / GPU cooling.

I also intend on replacing the fans with different ones, as at 12v those Lian Li ADDA fans are nasty sounding :/

2) Mine came with the blanking plate for the second PSU area. Which I used initially before lobbing in an old 350 Watt no-name PSU to power my Hard drives/Optical Drives and Fans.

As a side note, you do get the converter cable as well that turns both PSU's on when you hit the Power Button, something that isn't mentioned on the website or the reviews that I saw.

So Yewen,
Did you get that 5th PSU sorted yet or did you decide to move onto something more reliable ?

Ended up with a Seasonic 650w Energy+, 2x Silentmaxx enclosures and some fanmtes. :)

Got stuck in traffic and finished the build late, just gotten up ( :) ) so think I owe you a reply now. ;)

For the airflow I would go for what you suggest in number 1, just trial and error it but it is what I would start off with if your running air cooling. Sensible choice really as I have found Lian Li to be rarely right unless its the V series. :p

Depends where you ordered from as to which stock you get, it may be old stock so its hard to comment. I have only used an old one.

Good price for the case, got yourself a little bargain there and I doubt you will be disappointed.

Are you running dual graphics cards?

Thanks Yewen. And thanks to Arthalen and everyone else for their helpful comments.

Yep...dual 8800gtx's now. See sig.

So just to confirm, I should reverse the side fan so it is an intake, and the top fan so it's an outtake. Leave the bottom fan as stock intake. Basically traditional setup. I was thinking if I used the stock Lian Li setup the warm air at the top of the case would have nowhere to go considering the length of the G80's blocking airflow a bit. That side fan would have a lot of work to do, try to exhaust warm air from hdd's, gpu, and cpu.

Arthalen - are the stock fans 3pin jobs. Did you try hooking them up to our mobo headersa or are they too high power for that ?

I also agree with Arthalen said about the Etasis. It's considered here to be a "Tier 1" psu by this chap while the Galaxy is considered "Tier 2". Basically server grade psu.

I also found this for around 130 quid including VAT !! It just does not have the sata or molex cables sleeved but is essentially the same PSU as the Silverstone Zeus. G80 SLI certified too. 80mm fan is not as quiet as the Seasonic I had though.

Thanks...yes that's what I meant when I said I would reverse the sidefan so it is an intake. Do you mean add another fan there ?

So I would have :

bottom front fan => intake - cool hd's (stock setup)
side fan => intake - cool gpu's (instead of outtake)
top rear fan <= outake - remove heat from case (instead of intake, and dont bother with cpu guide thing)

Just wondering though - would the Lian Li cool better then my Akasa Mirage setup at present

It's exactly the same, except I have converted the bottom 3 x 5.25 bays to hold an 800rpm 120mm fan which blows a small amount of air towards the front on the Tuniq Tower.

Don't want to cut such a beautiful case.

I spoke to someone on another forum who has this case and he recommends leaving all fans at stock, and using the psu to remove the hot air from the cpu. Read on. Would be interested in your comments Yewen.

"Since my huge 1000watt Galaxy has an intake fan right there, I turned the Tuniq around so it could blow the air up through the fins and directly into the PSU intake. The rear exhaust fan of the Galaxy would then remove the warm air.

As far as the bottom fan goes you absolutely DO NOT want make any changes. Lian-Li's engineers have this down to a science. You would be risking adding hot spots within your case.

The bottom fan is an exhaust fan and it quickly removes heat not only from your case but from the video cards. This is crucial you do not make the mistake of turning that fan around. You would only raise the temps inside your PC.

The way most cases are built is that you have one or two fans in the front of the case pulling in cool air. It is then that the rest of the fans on the sides, rear and sometimes the top exhaust the warm air. I'm sure you understand that."

Hmmm....

Flanno,

Interesting. I have my Etasis coming v.soon and also will be playing around with a new air cooling setup.

The problem I see is Lian Li designed this case with 2 PSU's being used for airflow assitance. If you check out the diagrams on their website it shows the air coming in at the rear, through the CPU Fan then splitting to go up in the case and down in the case.

Do you have your Etasis mounted at the top or the bottom currently ?
