Did I make any glaring mistakes?

I guess I should have asked before I went ahead and ordered but it's too late now  I'm not all that bothered about overclocking at the moment so I'm not worried that I didn't go the C2D route. Also, I had a budget of £460 (but overstretched it a little in the end).

So, you reckon this will be ok?

Abit KN9 nForce Ultra (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.40GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail
Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Aluminium Midi-Tower Case
Hiper HPU-4M580 Type R 580W ATX2.2 PSU
OCZ 2GB PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2
Western Digital Raptor 36GB WD360ADFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache - OEM
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB ST3320620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

Thanks,
Simon

p.s. I'm getting an ATI X850 from a mate which is why there's no mention of a gfx card in the above :)

Justintime - AMDs prices suited my budget otherwise I prob would have gone for C2D.

Lolcb - Yeah, the Raptor's for XP.

At least I don't appear to have got anything *very* wrong which is reassuring (sp?)

Thanks for the replies guys.

Cheers,
Simon

The £500 budget is quite hard for core 2 duo, the core 2 duo does offer better performance even when its not overclocked but I think you did well for the budget. :)

I would have ditched the raptor (even tho they are great) and the PSU for a cheeper one as you dont need that power as you not overclocking. Also why such fast ram when not overclocking either!

Yeah the raptors are fine if you have a large budget, otherwise you're just restricting yourself for no great reason - for the price of the 36GB raptor you could have picked up a 320GB Barracuda, which is very close to the performance of the raptor but gives 11x the space. :)

400W PSU will be fine and allow upgrade to a better GFX card and mnore drives if the need be.

Stay away from Hiper PSU's there has been lots of stories of them dieing recently so may your head be it. Go for an Akasa

Unfortunatly I think he's already ordered the AMD system, nice to see you have good taste in components though Lolcb. ;)

Erk, Hipers and Raptors. Why do people always go for Hiper PSU's? I swear theres one in every other spec check thread, why are people so attracted to them? are they really that cheap? Surely all the exploding Hiper threads would have put people off.

They're not all bad. :)

I wouldn't recommend one to anyone building a new system though, mine was a case of "I need a PSU, NOW!" and running into the high street and buying the first thing I could find.

I chose it because:

1) it's promoted by OcUK in the top section of their PSU list with 4.5 stars
2) nothing in the 'Reviews' tab says anything bad
3) the price is good
4) I didn't spot any 'exploding hipers' threads (come to think of it, I didn't look too hard for PSU threads :( )

Maybe I'll get lucky :)

With regard to the 'Reviews' tabs next to products, do you think OcUK just delete any that say "this product has a tendency to be sh1te" or is it just that people only think to write one if they really like something ?

Cheers,
Simon

Biggest mistake was the Hiper.

It would appear that negative reviews do not get published so it's best to take them with a pinch of salt. It's not just here, some other retailers do this.

There are dozens of exploding Hiper threads on here as it has happened to many of us. The number is rapidly increasing week by week.

They constantly get slated in both online and magazine reviews as they are very innefficient and are unable to output their stated maximum wattage. One also made a review sites psu tester fail!!

Cant you send it back and get it changed? I am sure the etailor should honour this if its unopened, personally I would only buy PSU from Antec, Corsair/Seasonic, Tagan and maybe Enermax as they are proven to be extremely reliable. At the end of the day the PSU is one of the most vital part of your system, if it goes out it could take out some components with it and thats definately not worth the risk imo.

Yep, good idea. I made the order from OcUK yesterday so they won't (hopefully) have done anything about it yet what with it being Bank Holiday weekend and all.

I've used the online system to request they replace the Hiper with an Antec Truepower Trio 550W PUS

So, fingers crossed they read the message before pick/packing the order :)

Thanks for all the input guys.

Cheers,
Simon
