Did I make the wrong choice going for 120hz?

Sometimes I wonder how people were able to game and still be happy when they ditched their CRT screens with 100-120Hz refresh rates and went for the new modern slim TFT monitors and liked the sleek looks etc and gaming with 60Hz was perfectly fine.

Now it seems people cannot play with 60Hz since 120Hz has been "revived".
I changed from a 20" CRT with 120Hz to a 17" TFT 60Hz DVI TFT in 2002 and since then I have always had 60Hz TFT's and I am still able to play all my FPS shooters and still make a kill. I prefer sharpness & pixel density over Hz. When 120Hz on TFT's is common I'll see it as a bonus :)

Can't say I was ever happy moving from a CRT to a 60Hz TFT, after awhile tho your brain automatically compensates for the extra few frames where the image still has ghosting from previous frames but at the expense of reaction times. You only really notice how bad it is tho after spending awhile on a 120Hz TFT panel and trying to go back.

Theres a night and day difference to me playing on 120Hz v 60Hz in the number of instances where I think "I know I should have made that shot, how did it miss?!?!".

My preference would be to go with an IPS monitor, there is a colossal difference in the colours over TFT/TN monitors. On a TFN look washed out, I liken what you see to a wooden door on IPS you see all the grains in the wood on TFT it's like the door is brown you miss the details.

The decision can be summarised as if you want really smooth FPS and play Crysis 3 and BF3 then 120mhz is for you. If you want quality colours and fine detail and don't only play Crysis 3 and BF3 then IPS is for you.

IMO monitor response time is more noticeable in FPS gaming than refresh rate.

IPS is a panel type, just like TN.

Both IPS and TN go into 'TFT' monitors

Also, not all TN panels are alike. While many indeed have poor colour, others can be quite good (but as good as quality IPS, but still good)
