Did I receive a B grade CPU?

I bought a brand new 4770k CPU but this is the condition I received it in. I don't know if this is normal but it looks to be damaged when I opened the box.



Is it safe to use this processor? I took apart my old PC and now feel like a dumbass for not checking my new components first
 
Was the retail box sealed? It's pretty easy to spot the box being fiddled with. CPUs themselves often have marks from manufacturing, it'll be safe to use
 
Got it brand new from ocuk, it did have a seal but it came of straight away, there was no peel on it at all
 
I'm going to try it and see if it works, but those marks won't affect my warranty will they?
 
could you have touched the top by accident?

i guess it could be grease from your finger showing up on the fresh metal
 
I just cleaned and purified the surface with arcti clean and the marks seem to have disappeared, Ill report back after I got my PC running and give you guys an update, thx guys
 
As I understand it, Okuk offer preoverclocked cpu's. To get those golden cpu's, they have to bin the chips. To do this, they test a lot of the 'brand new' cpu's they have in stock. The best clocking ones are used in the preoverclocked bundles for sale here. The bad clockers get returned to the 'brand new' pile.

8pack made a post about this a few months ago, as I recall. I think he mentioned they only tested the OEM tray cpu's, but if I received a 'brand new' cpu in the condition you had yours, I would send it back and demand a refund/replacement with a proper seal etc.

I think it's a reasonable assumption that you cpu has been previously opened, tested, confirmed to be a average or poor clocker, then returned to stock to be sold to you.

Why would OcUK open up retail boxes when they have trays of OEM chips?

It's a manufacturing mark that came off with a simple wipe.

Thats correct, yes. They get trays of OEM chips that they bin. The retail chips are in sealed boxes so they dont get binned.

Its not reasonable to assume that. The cpu is fine, it just needed a wipe to clean the IHS.

In the past my Intel cpu's have had marks on the IHS.

The speed binned chips Ocuk I believe get used in other pre-built systems which use a lower overclock.
 
Virtually every new retail CPU I have bought has some minor marks on the lid. This is normal. Use it, it's fine. If it is broken, send it back. I have never seen a broken CPU even if it had been opened and binned. You can never have a guaranteed clock unless you buy a binned or pre-overclocked bundle so even if it was opened, it makes zero difference to you. You still have the full warranty.

This. I think every cpu i have bought new retail has had some marks on it.
