Did you do a dissertation at university?

Before starting university, I was under the impression that a dissertation was done for every course regardless of subject. Since starting university, it seems like most people I know haven't done one as it is purely optional on their courses.

The course I'm studying (BAEcon at Manchester) doesn't require a dissertation, in fact you can't even choose to do one unless you specialise in one area. Is this usually the case?

Nope didnt have to do one done a combined degree and the subjects chosen (didn't know this before hand) meant I didnt have to do a dissertation along my chosen path! but majoarity of mates did though.

over here you only do a major project or dissertation for the degree year and then you can choose an area and do a project or dissertation for your Masters.

Mine was a pretty huge time investment begun at end of 2nd year and went on until June.

8 weeks mapping
4 weeks in labs
hours infront of Pc typing it all up

then i woke up and rushed it all in 1 week.

The dissertation on my course was the determining factor of whether you got an (Hons) or not.
My dissertation was "The Short Term Effects of Cinnamic Acid on the Behaviour and Movement of Pardosa Amentata" :p

I did two:

BSc Degree
Using Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry to identify and map heavy metal bioaccumulation in urban foxes - Lots of dissections and hundreds of hours in the lab doing acid digests, all in all bloody good fun!

Masters Degree
Super-resolution mapping to characterise fragmented forest habitats - Far less grimy but still bloody hard work - involved deveoplmentand testing of new techniques in remotely sensed image processing

No, I did a research project and design project instead (I did engineering at uni).

I did one. Graduated 10 years ago though.

I can't even remember what it was about.

Not a dissertation as such but did a final year project (BSc Physics). It was worth a third of my final year marks and took up a significant amount of my time.

EDIT: It wasn't optional.

I'm not actually sure if I will have to or not! I know we have a final project, there's a chance that will be instead and the write up will probably be significant anyhow. Might check later actually.

Not optional on mine, BEng.

My project is doing a comparison of the various modes of microbuckling within thick laminate fiber reinforced composites, fun!

For my undergrad (MEng - Chem Eng) it was necessary to do a design project accompanied by a dissertation in the BEng year (for me, this was the design of a chemical reactor, distillation column and other auxiliary components) and then a research project with dissertation in the MEng year (I did solid-state physics for my research).
