Diesel emissions

TBH that is a good thing. Diesel buses cause a massive amount of the road pollution in cities.

But I have an idea for an alternative. I call it...a tram. It's simple, it's just a bus on a an electric rail! Much more efficient than an EV and no batteries. Cheap to make because theres no engine and as long as people stay out of the way, they don't get killed :D

And where are you going to find the space to lay down the infrastructure in any town in the UK to make trams viable

They just put trams into Birmingham city centre!

Yay, about 50 years after they removed the old ones lol

Many city streets were designed around the old tram systems. If you can fit a bus down it, you can lay tram rails. In fact the old trams were smaller than modern busses.

Derp, I forgot to consider the road still being usable even with rails on it, although I wonder what impact it would have on congestion on average

Trolley Bus would be way easier to put in place with battery as well the electric overhead cables would be the range extender. Way less noise polution than trams as well

Nowt wrong with them, just some fools tried converting them to Micro Hybrid and done a bad job at it!

Ours have a retarder that comes in like a sledgehammer and a gearbox ecu that changes up too early and then changes down and up and down....

Other than that and steering that is too heavy, they are nice buses.

The choice of vehicle for the accompanying photo for this article about Renault's emissions cracks me up. :D You simply cant beat news outlets not knowing the first thing about what they are reporting on!

There is a big to-do with Dodge in the US also now claiming the diesels kick out loads more pollutants than published.

What does interest me is the different way the US and Europe have gone about reducing emissions.

My 6.7 diesel ram put out less nox than the euro6 standard (0.04 gpm in the handbook)
but its co2 figure is around 3.8 gpm
It does run with an 8gallon urea/adblue tank though (The 8 us gallon adblue lasts around two full tank fills, the fuel tank is 90 us gallons)

Mine is 8 gallon us in the ram, but all my renault trafic minibuses have adblue tanks also (google says the tanks in those are 20litres).
I buy it bulk and last time it was 60p a litre.

Doesnt the cost of adblue kind of erase and fuel savings vs petrol? 60p a litre must be what an extra £6 a tank. I bet if you factor that in the running costs of petrol are pretty similar?

The size of the AdBlue tank fitted to your car will vary depending on which vehicle you have, even among different models within one manufacturer the tank sizes will vary considerably.

Therefore the interval between top-ups will vary. In addition, many factors such as mileage, journey type, driving style and environmental conditions can influence how much AdBlue is consumed.

However a rough guide that many manufacturers are using to detrmine size of AdBlue tank is approximately 1.5 liters of AdBlue every 600 - 650 miles.

All manufacturers will be fitting warning lights onteh dash to let you know the level is going down.

However it is very important to remember that if these warnings are not acted upon, the car will not restart once the ignition is turned off.
This is not a fault, but a required feature of the system, and all manufacturers have agreed to implement it.

If this stage is reached the system will need a full top-up before the car can be restarted.
While at first it might seem sensible to keep a few extra litres of AdBlue in the boot, this isn’t something to be recommended, as any spills or leaks are likely to damage your car’s interior. Do also note that you can’t keep a half-empty container of AdBlue in your garage if you have some left over after topping up, as airborne contaminants can affect the chemical composition of AdBlue, rendering it useless.

How is the adblue in a container with an airtight lid in the garage going to be any more contaminated over time than the adblue in the (Ventilated) tank on the car?
