Well I was all set on getting a Celica, however it now looks like I will be moving jobs, however not sure where but it's likely I will have to do some commuting 70-150 a day :o.. until at least summer. I'm going to leave it as late as possible (mid January) see what happens.

But what they like seen a couple of diesel ghia's but only 2 ghia x's for sale. Around the 1k mark..

are they really only 90bhp?
any comments/problems with them?

88bhp :p

Not bad motors, no noiser than a pug/citroen engine of the same era.
Everyone slates them, but doubt many have even driven one, let alone owned one.

Cast iron block and head, so a heavy but surdy engine, no hydraulic tappets, but solid with shims (less drag) so if it's tappy then the top end will be worn.

Cambelt every 40-70k, depending on year, being a turbo listen out for a siren noise to let you know it's on it's way out, mainly when warm.

Economy isn't anything special, probably 38+mpg.

Keep and eye on temperature gauge, check for excess pressure by squeezing the coolant pipes and by slowly removing the cap, so if you can give it some stick on a test drive.

I had a Ghia X mondeo on an S plate which at the time was only 1-2 years old, they are slow and sluggish because its a very heavy car with all the extras, will say one thing tho had plenty of gadgets to play with which was nice and to a tank if cruising i was lucky to get 430miles out of it which at the time cost me nearly £50 to fill up!

My dad on the other hand has a basic LX mondeo estate on a R plate, he can hit just under 580miles to a tank and was far quicker than what i had, no matter how i thrashed mine he pulled away from me.

EDIT* sry forgot to state both of these cars are/where diesels

If its Motorway stuff get a 2.0, drive it at 75 and you'll see near or over 40mpg.

TD Ghia X's dont have cruise control or a trip computer either.

As Fox said, the TD Ghia X's lack a lot of the Ghia X toys and are pretty much the same spec as my Petrol Ghia (no "X").

I can get 350-450miles per tank with mainly city and a little motorway driving.

If I drive around Bristol all of the time I still get 300miles to around £45 of fuel.

I haven't driven a diesel so I can't comment on that side of it. I had a V-reg (99) Ghia X 2.0 auto saloon until recently. It was very comfortable, had a decent array of toys and was decently quick when you wanted it to be - pretty good handling for the class of car too; and cheap compared to the competitors. I struggled to get 30 mpg from it though, partly that's down to the Auto box, of course, but still it's not good given that I was doing a motorway commute at the time - it returned barely 22 mpg around town.

It also started suffering from a steady stream of faults after it passed about 115k miles and I finally got rid of it after it was towed twice this year (once the brake servos failed coming off the M6, once the started motor died) and then developed a large lake in the boot (failure of the seals around the rear lights is apparently pretty common).

If, as TWFox says (and I have no doubt he's right), the diesel version has no cruise control I'd strongly suggest going for a petrol version - Cruise is really very nice when you're doing motorway commutes.

Cruise control is the ONLY thing I miss in my Ghia Estate. (I had a Ghia X Hatch before)
