diesel tuning

Is it possible to remap/tune the Ford 1.8tdi engine (This one is the TDI, not TDCI from an '02 Focus) :)

Very low power right now, about 98 if memory serves correctly, and was thiking of picking up the old man's for a while as a stopgap between current car and something else!

yes, you can have power of 30hp and 65nm on this engine.
www.XXXXXXXXX.com do a tuning system that allows you to swap between standard and modified maps on one device.

I know very little about diesel tuning as it's not something that interests me.

I have to ask though, surely all this tuning for extra performance negates the benefits of owning a diesel - ie good fuel consumption?

Not at all my mate gets even more mpg in his astra cdti 150 now its remapped!

Nope, not at all. My fuel economy hasn't changed at all for better or worse.

Isn't this the 'tuning company' that was the subject of a VERY interesting 25+ page thread on Passionford a while back that did the rounds on the forum?

oh? Care to eloborate or link? :)

we do not treat a £200,000 car any different too a £2000 car

Very worrying backwards quote from there!

Having done myself a little spreadsheet comparison performance to price, servicing costs, running costs etc - the Astra seems to be top. Its the highest on depreciation but if you buy one around 30k miles that is nearly negated by the longer service intervals etc. It also seems to boast the highest performance from a re-map, and good mpg still. Seems daft for me not to go for one of these, I've got the cash, just depends what a dealer would give me for my car!

A3 1.9 will go from 130 to 160ish.

195 from 130 on a 1.9 through a remap only is a waste and a strain.

In terms of fuel economy you gain 1-2 mpg better, however if your driving style changes because you have more power then you could be draining more fuel so it is not because of the remap but your own driving habbit.

The only worry I would have on a VAG is the DSG, theres only so much it can take and if you go beyond a remap you're taking a risk. However a manual diesel, well this speaks for itself: http://www.allardmotorcompany.co.uk/filestore/list/documents/Allard-A3-TDI-quattro.pdf

Turbo diesels are easy to remap, just make sure you go to a good company. The best three for VAG are Revo, GIAC and Superchips.

The only place i've found even listing the Focus 1.8TdDI is

http://www.tuningbox.com

And thats quoted figures of

Focus 1.8 TDdi 66KW 90HP 200NM 85KW 115HP 250NM VP63

I know thats justa tuning box company I assume, and I wouldn't, if I even go for the Focus for a short while, jump to the first one, but I can't see many places listing even tuning that engine (I know its a dog rough, and loud engine!)

Upsolute.com will do it, they did my old Passat for me.

Remapped modern diesels are bonkers...

A few cars that are very close to mine after a remap:

Fabia VRS - 200bhp
Astra CDTi - £200+ Bhp
BMW - 120d 200Bhp (came past me after after a while)

and some type of Astra Van... yes a van, it was an 08 plate and it was somehow much quicker than it should have been.. the owner asked me what I'd done to mine after so i think he expected to beat me.. which is worrying.

Also Lopez the economy isn't affected that much, infact the VRS was returning 35-40 when he was driving quickly, the BMW suffered a bit more though at around 30MPG.

I think you can get the Astra van with the 1.9 150 CDTI engine with a remap and the lesser weight with no back seats etc I am sure they are very quick.

Who cares about horsepower in a diesel anyway you get an insane amount of extra torque.

My mate was looking at seat (VW) diesels and a remap of a 1.9 would see over 400 torques in the mid range. Thats bonkers pulling power in any gear.

economy usually improves, depending on your driving style, due to the shifting of torque lower down the range with a smoother power delivery.

i use to get around 49-50mpg in my HDI before my remap, now i see around 54-55mpg normal driving. spirited driving sees me back to the 49-50 region.

thats on a HDI running at approx 145-150bhp, 0-60 is around 7.5-8 seconds. im working with a mapper currently on improving the map ATM too... currently the map is smokeless! very impressive.

soooooooooo easy to gain power out of these modern dervs. i believe a member of the Fabia VRS community is now pushing over 300bhp, think hes still keeping it quiet though. i would love a go in an Astra CDTI SRI remapped, anyone watch the 5th gear comparison with the Astra Petrol Sri? hardly any difference between the two! in fact i believe the derv beat the SRI from a rolling start too...

I went down the other tuning road and bought a DTUK tuning box...

Mondeo TDCi 130 supposedly now about 165-170bhp and torque now about 400Nm

Not actually verified the numbers, but the box makes the car a whole different animal. The surge of acceleration as the turbo kicks in rarely gets boring! I'd recommend a tuning box to anyone. Ive noticed that driven like for like economy is 2-3mpg better with the box. Driven hard economy obv. gets worse. Have done about 8K miles since fitting it.
