Diesel tuning

Well given that his viewpoint was changed with one image.... I doubt he knows much about either.

well it wasnt really more like the one about doing lots of miles in a diesel vs petrol.

the reason i wanted a dturbo was that I like the way they drive.

and the bit about 'i know everything about petrol tuning'. i know what can be done with a petrol but wasnt sure with diesel.

just to show you i know what can be done with petrol, you can rebore, fit bigger injectors/carbs, higher compression pistons, light con rods, camshaft mod, turbo/supercharger[x1/2/3/4/???], air filter, bigger intercooler/rad, an there are a few other thing that i cant think of atm.

Do you really like the way a diesel drives over a petrol? Are you sure?

That isn't meant in the usual OCUK condescending tone but I've got a modded diesel and I'd swap it for a petrol given half a chance.

As do I and as would I - Looks like we'll need 2 cars soon and I can't wait to get a reasonably powered petrol again, be it turbo or na.

Don't get me wrong I like my car, it's reasonably swift and gives good economy.....but it's still a diesel, still sounds like a diesel and still revs like a diesel.

Even a BMW 6 diesel, whilst mightily impressive for an oil burner is nothing like as nice to drive as its petrol equivalent

For all its failings the VAG 2.0TDI engine (A4 B7 170 mapped with DPF, EGR and EGR cooler removed) is a far better drive than the 1.9TDI. But its still diesel. If I get it just right its not that much different to my old UK Impreza Turbo in terms of shove but get it wrong and it like being in a 1.0 Polo (probably)

I wouldn't mind going down the turbo, injectors, breathing route etc. but I just CBA. Rather buy the Mrs a petrol turbo car and pinch that on the weekends :)

On Ford TDCI's the common mods are remap, K&N panel filter (I don't believe you get real gains personally), larger front mount Intercooler & a de-cat (not req'd for diesel MOT until law changes next year).

Depending on which re-map you have and how much of the other bits you do you should be able to get a Maximum of 35-40% more torque and 25-30% more bhp with everything on that list. The figures are mainly taken from my own and others Mondeo/Focus 130hp & 155hp engine figures but mine are slightly less as I don't have a max power remap but a "more MPG" one (proven 8MPG more on my commute with +10hp and +50ft/lbs dyno'd).

Whether it's worth it is down to you and your particular needs. I've always been a modder at heart so rational thought wasn't involved in my decision to tune my car :D

K & N filters with VAG diesels is a bad idea, they mess with the MAF sensor and the paper filters are just as good anyway. The 1.6TDi should be able to get to about 140bhp from a remap but could cause problems with the DPF.

If you aren't buying new you could get one of the last few 1.9TDi sports (i think they did them until 2010) and i dont think they have a DPF and there are a lot of tuning options for them as they've been around forever and aren't that bad an engine.
