Diesel -v- Petrol

I made a quick and dirty little script to calculate the cost differences, and how long it would take at current fuel prices, for the savings with a diesel to be made.

http://www.my105e.com/fuelpricecomparison.php

Plug the purchase price of the two cars, their fuel consumption, cost-per-litre and annual mileage, and hit Submit.

Suggestion: maybe another row for estimated servicing/maintenance cost as these will differ as well.

Nice tool otherwise.

general consensus on here is that we all love diesels, and that petrol is dead money.

only a few can keep the sheer torque under control though.

plus theyre power delivery is nicer.

:D

p.s. go petrol

I remember the days when a 306 D Turbo could outrun even the fiercest petrol cars.

Nice little calculator you also need to factor in come resale time the diesel will be worth more than the petrol though.

assuming petrol costs £1.10 per litre. 1 Gallon Of petrol costs £4.95
assuming Diesel Costs £1.20 pet litre. 1 Gallon of Diesel costs £5.40

Assuming roughly 12 gallons of petrol per tank.

Diesel tank will get you 576 miles for £64.80. Petrol tank will get you 456 miles for £59.40

So the Tank of Diesel costs you £5.40 extra, or 1 gallon of petrol extra. And gets you 120 miles extra. Extra Gallon of petrol would have got you an extra 38 miles. So effectively your saving 3 gallons of petrol for every tank of diesel you use. Saving of just under £15 per tank.

Diesel itself is always going to be cheaper, no matter what the price difference.

But you have to factor in extra servicing costs (diesel service interval will be shorter). More frequent component failures (Turbos etc..) And the fact the ford diesel sounds like a tractor engine and is relatively unrefined compared with other marques.

Draw your own conclusions.

edit DAMN YOU confused. Just took me ages to compose the above post :p

You forgot to include a comparison with the purchase price as well.

Generally speaking a diesel car will always be cheaper to run than its petrol equivilant on a day to day fuel basis however longer term the overall difference isn't that big. (ie it will take you quite a while to recoup the initial purchase price difference in fuel savings).

In the future however when you come to sell the car (given the current demand for diesel cars compared to petrol versions) you should get more for the diesel model than you would for the equivilant petrol model.

How are you working fuel cost out?

Going on 10000 miles a year, 40mpg and 112p/l

10000/40 = 250 gallons used

250 x 4.54 = 1135 litres used

1135 x 1.12 = £1271.2

Your calculator gives a cost of £1013 :)

Don't most people say "Right I've got £xxxx to spend on a car what can I get?"

Not, "Right I WANT a 02 Ford C-Max, petrol or diesel"

So surely cost of purchase is pointless. You should be looking at the resale value of the two cars priced the same at the point of purchase surely?

Having driven a 2.0 petrol S-Max, I'd personally go for the diesel on driveability alone without looking too closely at the costs. The diesel will cost more to buy but you'll almost certainly get most if not all of that back when you sell it.

You also need to bear in mind where the petrol/diesel version fare under the new punitive tax system which may have a bearing on costs.

No, becuase you could spend less than your budget on an equivilent petrol car and make a saving.

'I want to spend £10k, I could buy an 05 Car W Diesel for that'

'Oh hang on, this 05 Car W Petrol is £9k! Great!'

Job done.

The other logic is flawed becuase it allows you to make true yet misleading statements like 'A BMW 7 Series costs no more than a Micra'.

Whoops :o I divided by fuel cost, not multiplied... :o

But most people don't think like this, they just go and buy the diesel because it's 'cheaper to run'... :p

However come resale time the diesel is going to be worth more than the petrol so you have not really saved the full £1000.

How would that be? Most of the Galaxy's and S-Max petrol and diesel second hand we've seen have been pretty much on par. If diesel gets to a point that it's less economic than petrol then surely the price would demise.

to be honest ive found this

it seems to be only certain marques / models where there is massive price premium for Diesel

BMW being one of them. 330cdis fetch way above what a 330ci of similar age/spec would.

Not having access to autotrader at work, i can only check parkers. But parkers shows the difference between petrol and diesel of similar / spec age to be less than £400.

With only £400 difference, it will only take you 8 tanks of fuelbefore you recoup the extra purchase cost

having said that, i couldnt live with a tractor and would go petrol...

well if your tax changes for car emissions then like over here in Ireland the diesel will be cheaper to tax and buy due to its lower emissions.

why bother posting that ? if you'd read the thread in any detail whatsoever you can see its usually at least 10p if not more a litre expensive.

and im not just saying that because i said, at least 2 or 3 other people said this before i did ..
