Diesel

Surely a 3.0 V6 petrol (Turbo or Non Turbo) isn't going to tow a 1.5 or 2ton trailer better than a 3.0 V6 Derv with 650nm? All about the torque.

This petrol vs diesel argument gets old real quick.

I don't dislike diesel but neither am I for it. I'll always prefer a diesel on a long journey to save on fuel and low revs. Though for town driving I'd much prefer a small petrol engined car.

I do think large petrol engined cars work well with an auto box for the lazy diesel feel element of driving.

Good for you. Did you read the post above it?

Is it necessary to be such ** Removed **I asked a simple question in the OP, some folks answered it which I appreciate. I've stated my viewpoint towards diesel and why I have come to that opinion.

Quite why this is turning in to such a ridiculous argument is beyond me. I'll go back to GD for some reasonable discussion then.

But then most people don't buy a petrol car for towing trailers/caravans etc and if they do they buy bigger, thirstier 4L+ V8's which have 600+nm of torque, so you buy around what your needs are.

However for "normal" driving there's not much to separate a 3L Turbo petrol/diesel car nowadays (last 2 years).

Almost nobody picks a car for its towing ability.

My diesel has 540nm and still isn't as fast as the petrol turbo.

Let's get real here, diesels are complete turds but they serve a purpose hence there is a market for them.

The issue comes when people start banging on about how they love the torque of their 335d and wouldn't want an M3 when in reality they just couldn't afford one, that is where issues begin to stem.

You state that like it's a proven fact.

Let's get real here. I don't think the diesel engine in my car is a turd. If it was I wouldn't have bought it.

I like the combination of the mid-range torque, 2000 rpm at the legal motorway limit and 55+mpg all at the same time.

I like the first two from my petrol 530i, admittedly I get nowhere near the third (roughly 23mpg average) but I do ~10k p/a at most in my car so it's not an issue to me fortunately.

The 13litre six pot turbo diesel in my truck is a remarkable thing though and the 16litre V8 variant is truly something to behold, 730bhp and 3500nm of torque is far from turd like, and it sounds wonderful! :)

Trucks have proper diesels though, not these Mickey Mouse car ones! :D

I agree entirely with your M3 / 335d analogy though.

Given he's got a DB9, I hazard a guess that to his mind they are, and I almost don't blame him with that perspective!

You bought the diesel engine because you couldn't afford to run a petrol equivalent. There is no other reason to do it.

If I was a millionaire I wouldn't buy a diesel ever.

Lets get real here, money no object no one would go around buying diesels....(commercial excluded)

No sane person would want to drive a diesel over the petrol equivalent.

The only issue I have with diesels is the noise some of them make, particularly at idle.

I've driven a Polo 9N3 1.8T GTI (150HP) and a Polo 9N3 1.9TDI PD130 with a re-map (165HP) and the GTI was more fun overall, but the TDI was still great, the low end grunt was amazing and it pulled like a train, it was effortless. Much cheaper to buy too.

This post makes it sound like all I do is drive Polo's... :p

Wasn't there a European City mayor that wanted to ban diesels from her city based on fairly solid pollution grounds (NOX levels), but realised she couldn't as it would basically ban everyone as the EU are so deep in with CO2 emissions that practically nobody drives a petrol?

hhmm, I'm not sure.

I could have afforded the 5L supercharged - the car was slightly cheaper and the fuel would have been £2K per year more which for a £40K car isn't a huge difference. I did seriously think about changing for the noise and extra power, but the range was the clincher. I can easily do 450 miles between fill-ups in the diesel, whereas the Supercharged is less than half that, which becomes annoying on long journeys. I hate having to pull over for fuel!

It was close, and had the petrol had the same range then I agree I would have preferred that and maybe decided to live with the extra cost, but modern diesels, at least in a well sound proofed car with a good automatic box are very refined.

Even with a range of 250 miles, for most people that is filling up once a week. 10k a year, average out 25-30 miles a day, you'd be filling up once a week which is hardly a chore.

You headed me off at the pass with that one mate! :p :D

Only reason I added commercial was that I knew you were hanging around this thread :D It was a given but thought it'd be safe to add it in to save you time writing out a long post :p
