Diesels and Stalling

Which is also coincidentally why diesels with half a billion pounds-foot of torque aren't that much faster than equivelant power petrols - the torque doesn't get as multiplied up to the wheels by the ratios :)

I think its due to the fact I try to get away with pulling away in 2nd when the cars slightly moving, works in petrol but diesel hates it.

Agreed. My dads Audi A3 1.6FSI pulls away fine even in third (if given enough revs) even at very low speeds <10mph.

However my A2 1.4TDI hates to pull away in second at any speed (unless it gets above 1500rpm).

The torque in my A2 is fun though. Will pull up my grandads drive (which is steep) just on the clutch. My dads car needs throttle as well do get up the same slope.

When I was learning I dumped the clutch in first with the handbrake off accidentally, the car lurched and carried on moving forward, my feet were totally off all the pedals. Engine rumbled a lot, but it didn't stall, I was very surprised.

206 TDi with 5k on the clock, maybe why?

That Fiat/GM design(1.3CDTi) is not an easy engine to get used to I must admit. I kept stalling it multiple times every lesson, when I moved onto an Astra 1.7CDTi I was fine

Who designed the 1.7?

ISUZU I think...

I frequently stall my Scania's 12 Litre diesel! :o

Crap driver then :D

I used to scare the pants off my wife when driving my old TDi by taking my shoes off whilst driving (with nothing around us on the motorway), almost like cruise control but slower.

Diesels are great for almost driving themselves, though not too fast.

Try driving a mondeo TDCI and then tell me diesels are hard to stall, the first week or so of having it I must have stalled it a dozen or so times.

A fella at work has a Mondeo ST 2.2TDCi, and OMG thats one loud engine, sounded like a tractor as the guy drove past me and my workmate.

:D

I thought the 2.2 was more refined? My dads 2.0 TDCi is very tractor like but luckily from inside the car its very muted.

He also complained that he stalled it a lot coming from his TD Mk 2.
