This is basically a means to an end - it is the only way to get past the current capacity issue.
If we weren't using Perpendicular writing we would be stuck at 750GB (I believe) capacity HD's.
The speed boost is mainly from the general advancement in drive technology.

I have 2 x Seagate 200GB SATA 7200.7s, and also a couple of the 320GB Seagate SATA 7200.10s, I find that the 7200.10s are (depending upon cont.) 10-13MB/s faster (Average read in HD Tach) than the 7200.7s.
