Difference between Freehouse & Public House?

A public house is a pub.

A free house is a type of pub that is not owned by a brewery, and thus can freely serve what beers they like.

So can a pub(lic house) sell any beer from any brewery?

A freehouse and a non free house i.e ones owned by a brewery are all public houses or pubs as they are more commonly known.

Freehouses are general owned by individuals and can sell whatever drink they like. Non freehouses will only sell the drinks made by the brewery or contracted suppliers i.e pepsi/coke etc

A Public house is just a name for any pub

A freehouse is independent of any brewery

a tennanted house , the landlord owns the business but the brewery the premises ad the landlord is generally tied to sellimg what they tell him to

a managed house is entirely owned by the brewery and the landlord is just an employee

Bang on. I'll just add that with a tennanted house, the tennant doesn't actually own the pub, just rents it off the brewery, and is tied to their products. Unless thats what you meant?

To me, that's exactly what he said

We have a brilliant Freehouse about 200 yards from OCUK called The Malt & Hops. The Landlord travels around the country with a trailer and brings back some of the best real ale going. Its his pub and he can do what he likes.

On the other hand a public house is owned by the brewery and the brewery can charge whatever they like. As soon as the landlord starts to do well they can put the prices up.
One example is actually on the front page of my website where I've apologised to the audience who turned up to a gig and had to pay.
Because he's doing well the landlord as had his rent put up to £900 a week by the brewery
The council have decided to charge him £1800 a month rates and his electricity bill has gone up to £1200 a month
On top of that the brewery are putting £35 on a barrel of beer and he hasn't put his beer prices up just yet.

Just been wondering what the difference between a Public House and a Freehouse is? Was able to find this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pub) on Wikipedia but didn't really help.

A freehouse is a subset of a public house; Namely one that isnt tied to a brewery, and so the owner is free to sell any beers he chooses (provided that the breweries are willing to sell him said beer).

EDIT. I felt it VERY important to repeat what has already been said ;)

In my case it was replying to the OP without reading the other replies first.

Mea culpa.
