Hi,
I can't quite get my head around the concept of HDTV and HD screens, I just bought a new sony laptop that has a 1080 HD screen apparently, but im not sure what that actually means.

HD is all about displaying high resoultions right ? Can my standard 17" TFT screen on my PC not display a high enough resolution to be classed as HD ?

I hope the makes sense, basically what makes a LCD disply 'HD'

It's resolution is what makes a screen HD. 720p comes out as 1280x720 and most HD tvs are 1388x768 or something like that so they can display 720p video. 1080p is true high definition and makes 720p look like a poor mans HD :p . Is the resolution of your sony screen 1920x1200? If it is then you can see full 1080p video on it which needs a minimum resolution of 1920x1080. Then again your screen might be bigging up the fact that it can display 1080i video which I'm not totally sure about so someone else is gona have to answer that.

Sony

Thats the spec for it.

My TFT Screen on my main PC disaplays at 1280x720, does that mean HD sources are displayed in HD (720p) ?

Think so yea. :)

My xbox is set to chuck stuff out at 1280x1024, and OMG. I thought it was good at 1024x768 until I changed over today.

A poor mans HDTV if you have a tv card in your pc. :p

It would look much better on a screen with the high def rez and high contrast ratio. Can;t wait to build a rig which handles a high def movie and hopefully buy a 24" screen. Do you have a link to that elephant dreams movie?
