I had VM 20meg installed the other day and i was wondering how i can get a ping of 15-20 on most battlefield servers but 40-50 on COD4 servers?

It seems really strange whey there would such a big difference.

Do i need to change any settings in COD4?

When i search for servers on COD4, and order them by latency, the lowest ping is 18, and there are a load between 18-25. but when i join the ping is never anywhere near that, its always 40-50. I just dont see why my COD ping is sooo much higher than my BF ping...

It's the way the game netcode handles the traffic which is why you can see 18 out of the game, but once joining and data is being sent then the code takes over.

Also, having never owned CoD4 on the PC, can you set your network speed as that may cause problems when you join in-game..

I dont know about network speeds, thats what i was wondering really. If there are any internal settings i can change?

I almost always have a ping of 20 on my clan server but I can't tell the difference between that and playing a match on another clan's server where my ping is 60 for example. I don't really notice a real difference until it hits 100.

No i cant really tell the difference, i was just curios as to why there was such a big difference?

I had a ping of 14-16 on BF and 45-48 on COD4 earlier. Thats like 3 times the ping!

It's all to do with the servers themselves, where theyre hosted, whos hosting them and tehn teh games netcode also. In my experience thru the few differing standards of connection I've been on your pipe really has very little impact on this.

For example TF2 I currently get anywhere between 15-40 ping, I remember getting pings of 30-60 on dialup, Im currently on 20Mb Cable from Virgin.

CoD 4 also has a display bug with ping in that it changes relative to your FPS.

Play it on a medium spec machine and turn all the yummyness up, your FPS Drops and ping increases.

No idea why it only happens on this game.

I changed the max packets to 100 and that reduced my ping to ~35 :) thanks :)

any others like that?

I just want to know why there is such a big difference... Ive tried multiple servers in both games. Always get a sub 20 ping in BF and always get a 40-50 ping in COD...

No way you got that, even if you had ISDN it got nothing close to that.

ISDN isn't that different from DSL in that regard - just the networks didn't tend to be as well developed back then - pings of 60ms weren't uncommon on ISDN and I've seen below that.

On dialup the digital/analog conversion can take upto 50ms each way - usually it takes the full amount of time or close to it... so minimum pings you will normally see is 100ms, then take into account the over subscribed networks back then and 150+ is more common. Lowest I've ever seen is ~80ms in game servers hosted by my dialup ISP back in teh day.

COD4 is massively affected by rate settings and framerate as said above... optimally you want something like 125fps steady with cl_maxpackets 100 or 125, rate 25000. Not sure off hand what the snaps setup is in COD4 but if the servers are running above default sv_fps you might have to raise you \snaps setting to compensate - otherwise your ping will rise.

ISDN was really far from DSL. I game at 5-10ms on London servers. I think when using ISDN latency was actually lower than I remembered previously, ping times in the 40's were possible. Good but nothing close to DSL/Cable.

There was one ISDN gamer ISP back in teh day that used to advertise in PC Zone as "pings as low as 14ms to jolt"... in regards to latency ISDN isn't that far removed from DSL, your not likely to see sub 10ms pings but it can deff. manage sub 20.

The reason it was 40-60ms pings back in the day was due to the more primitive networks around at the time and general oversubscribing of links.

a bit off topic? :P

anyway, is a 40ish ping the norm for VM cable to COD4 servers?

I just donnt see why there is such a difference between is, 15ms on BF and 45 on COD, thats 3 times!!!

As said before, yes its normal.
CoD 4's ping is effected by its FPS.
If i turn all my settings to min (And thus get ~ 200+ FPS min) my ping drops to 15-25 in most servers.
Keeping settings maxed (60-75 FPS) and my ping sits at 40-60.

Turning off the Vsync in COD4 but leaving all other options at full whack allowed my FPS to go up a fair bit, somebody told me it's because the Vsync being enabled limits the FPS to the refresh rate or something? I haven't really noticed any tearing either which is good.

Either way, my FPS is around 100, which is good for my machine and the level of detail, and pings are around 30 ish if connected to a UK server. :)
