differences between card brands and stock overclocks

I am looking at getting an 8800GT to replace my 7900GT and with the scarce availability was thinking about brands...

I am not interested in the bundle that comes with them, the cooler as I am water cooled or the minor differences in price.

What I am wondering is wether or not there are other differences...

Are the ones that are overclocked out of the box cherry picked cores that are more likley to overclock further with good cooling?

Are the pre over clocked ones aver over volted in any way to keep the overclock stable?

Basically if I am happy to wait is there any point in buying for example the asus card which has a stock frequency of 700mhz or shall I just get the first card that I find?

Only differences are the warranties, and what software you get with them as all the cards are the same (like the 8800 GT's, all built in the same factory by the same company, and just have the individual brands names stuck on em), so you may as well buy the first one you can grab, as they will all go to the overclocked ones speeds (as they aint that much higher anyway), and beyond.

May be some cherry picking - impossible to say with certainty imo.

If you intend to replace heatsink AND you do not want to void warranty then you are very limited as to make -- EVGA is only one I know of who may allow for such.

Bought a Zotac myself which is clocked faster than standard model - price and availability were however the deciding factors.Would have been happy with a base model but got the Z for same price

Thanks for the welcome!! I am not really new here, I lost my password and it seemed like more of a pain to try to get my account sorted by an admin than to make a new one!

If they aren't cherry picked how do asus ensure a stable 700 mhz when IIRC some people on air can't get standard colcked the cards up to 700? Or can everyone hit 700 on air and did I just imagine seeing people top out at late 600's?

I am not too worried about waranty , once I started overvolting and water cooling I decided to accept the fact that if something dies it is my problem!!

Once they get there stocks any that happily clock to 700 on air they sell for a higher rate with a different bios, that's all.

My Point of View is 100% stable at 700/1700/2000 & I havent even bothered trying to get it higher, it's clocked enough for my liking

It realy depends on the manufacture and luck, I know some say they cherry pick the oc'd cards, you could get a card that doesnt overclock that well, you could also get an overclocked card that struggles at 700 or you might get a bit more out of it.

Did the bios mod and got my POV to 770/1780/2000 and can play Crysis without crashing but running 760/1780/985 usually as I don;t want to over push the card.

Luck of the draw just like CPU's.

Although there is a rumour that BFG up the GPU voltage to 1.1 from default to achieve higher clocks.

My 7900 was overvolted to 1.55v i think and has been overclocked to within an inch of it's life so I am happy to push this too!

Ha sa bios mod been proven to help? I thought from my reading on xtreme systems that it was inconclusive...

The bios does up the voltage however just like cpu's if you have a poor clocking gpu it won't do that much.

It should net you an extra 50 on the core. Shaders, maybe 100 or so. I would imagine it should give most people at least a solid 700/2000.
