I cant find a nice little list that details the exact differences in channels, on-demand and HD offerings.

Can someone help me out please.

not got any lists but, Virgin pretty much just has BBC HD so no HD Sport or Movies, The V= box can record 2 channels and watch another while the Sky+box iirc correctly only allows you to record 1 and watch 1 other. Skyports is limited on virgin with regards to match choice, you only get what is being shown on the main screens no red button goodness, ditto sky movies. Virgin does however have a more developed on demand service with tv catchup etc being very handy. you can also watch iplayer through virgin (no idea if you can through sky).

Virgin has BBC Iplayer.
Sky has better digital teletext offerings (it's horrible on Virgin).
Virgin record 2 channels watch a 3rd
Sky record 2 programs, watch one that is recording or watch a recorded program
Virgin only have BBC HD

I don't think there's a roadmap, just statements from Virgin saying they're trying to get more linear HD content.

At the moment I'd go with Sky every time, there's nothing really on on-demand that can't be watched (legally) online but you can't get the extras you'd get from Sky anywhere else.

anyone know if there is any roadmap for further HD on virgin?
HD has been a bit of a bug bear for the Virgin Community. Neil Birkett (COO of VM) has made many many promises about linear HD content coming to the platform but it has never materialised. I left VM about a year ago because of all the broken promises on HD content.

However on the plus side you have a vast library of On Demand material and in my opinion the VM box upscales SD content better than my Sky + Box.

I have a couple of virgin boxes, one of which is HD and overall I'm happy with virgin (been with them or rather ntl about 4 years). It would be nice to have more HD content but I'd rather not have a sky dish at the moment.

Think Virgin uses a different encoder to Sky that means that they can't have as many channels as Sky. Not 100% sure though, only read about it.

As for HD, Virgin say that they will get more, no doubt they will, but i can't see them getting more than Sky.

Aye that's partly it, VM still use mpeg 2, which uses more bandwidth than Sky's HD which is one of the more advanced codecs.
However as VM shut down the analogue channels on their network that should free up space for HD channels (IIRC each Analogue channel takes up the space of 2 or 3 HD mpeg2 ones), but the bigger problem for them in terms of HD is basically Sky who from what I can tell aren't currently willing to let them have the movies/sports in HD at a reasonable price (as HD is currently the major selling point of Sky as opposed to Cable where both are available).

I suspect we will finally see C4 HD sometime this year on Cable though.

Again, as people above have said. It's mainly the HD content, of which Sky owns. Love watching all the films in HD :D

But Virgin should get the C4 HD channel soon, waiting for ITV to release an HD channel, they're the only main channel left :/

ITV already do have an HD 'channel'. It's hidden from the EPG and comes up as a red button option during programmes that are also available in HD, i.e. Champions League football. At the moment it only works like that on Freesat, on Sky you have to have the new EPG software and manually input the parameters.
