Just found out the site that i am working at, the top earners earn more per month (before tax) than i do per year (before tax) this just sickens me. Then when they have an IT problems they wonder why you don't jump through hoops for them.

The company i work for uses an IT contractor because it benefits them, they pay the IT contractor obviously more money than I make per year and IT ends up getting shafted because of it. They can get away with not paying benefits to the IT contractor and they treat the IT contractor like ****.

The guy i sit next to who is the biggest **** ive ever met, most pompous person on the planet, went to eton boys school or whatever, speaks like a total posh git. He makes more per quarter than i do per year and he does hardly any work. He spends most of the day doing fall and occasionally has a meeting or has to do a document. But expects me to run around like a little helper. Barking orders at me, realy makes me sick.

This is total BS, I think IT is completely under valued, especially sysadmin and IT systems support. Yea when it is not working all hell breaks lose and if they can't do something and they need IT help to do their own job sufficiently, then i am expected to do it. Mean while they are on almost 10 times my salary. IT realy needs to force these big companies to pay them a fair salary because this sort of thing is outrages.

It is just a disparity in pay that i am moaning about. You see if you I work for a small company doing the exact same job then i will earn the exact same salary because i work in IT but if i work for a company that has millions of £ in the bank and deals will billion £ companies then I would expect a salary that is more in line with the sort of organization that i work. But for some reason when it comes to IT, you can be working for a no name company who barely gets by and the top company on the planet and you are expected to earn the same salary. IT is definitely under valued and under paid and is borderline exploited.

This is not just me, i have a good job. I am moaning about IT pay in general across the entire market.

Working in these law firms in central london where solicitors charge £800+ per hour and that is more than i make in a week. The law firm makes 100 millions of pounds per year and they have all their IT staff on the lowest possible salaries that they can get away with. Often they have outsourced IT and the staff are on even lower than market rates, the whole thing is just exploitive and sickening. In reality these IT staff are the backbone of the modern office and you see that when they phone IT asking for help on documents and help meeting deadlines. How many cases have i helped win because of working on a document etc and for what? for some cheapo exploitive salary, so these eton ****** can sit back and say jolly good ol job chap.

You think a train strike is bad for the economy. A sysadmin and IT support staff strike would see the economy ground to a stand still. Yea IT is an expense, one that they depend on to make money.

I have done case work. I have worked on presentations that have gone in to tenders that have landed multi million £ jobs. What do i get for it? nothing.

IF we had to do a national IT strike, the entire economy would ground to a halt.

No i think this sort of thinking is the reason why IT gets exploited so bad, indian support is definitely not up to par with the support that i am expected to offer. Don't know about your job, but my job can not be outsourced to india because it requires on site presence.

The receptionist is on a better salary than me and all she does is look pretty all day and answer the phone, oh and collect guests from downstairs. Definitely does not create wealth or add value any more than IT. But she is internal, gets private healthcare, big bonus etc.

I am moving to another site where I will be getting more money and a better salary but that is beside the point. I am talking about IT in general, not specifically my job.

I just think there should be some reward within IT for a) working for some of the biggest firms in the world should earn you more money b) actually acknowledging that IT are not just an expense and actually do contribute in more ways than one to service delivery; and as such should be rewarded directly for this.

I bet you won't find any difference in pay between say goldman sachs IT staff members and IT staff members for some tiny office with a tiny turnover. Where goldman sachs makes billions per year and this little tiny office probably selling some crappy product lucky to break even or make a million. This is the exploitative IT pay that i am specifically referring to.

IT should be paid loads more working for companies than earn billions.

Maybe a better comparison would be a small legal practice and one of the top five in the world legal practice.I guarantee that IT staff will be paid the same salaries at the top law firms than at some little legal practice above a fish and chips shop.

Most of the IT departments in these big law firms are a mess, massive queues, bad level of support etc. I wonder why, its because they under pay their staff and expect their IT staff to do more work for less pay and they treat them like **** as well.

I have just got my second pay rise this year and moving up to third line support in may. So like i said, this is not about me specifically. I am doing ok i think. But I am just moaning about IT in general.

I was offered this job for one of the top law firms in the world with a turn over, over £1 billion PER YEAR and for what salary, pea nuts, compared to what they earn. I hope they get some worthless IT staff member who fails at every task.

To get an internship at goldman sachs you must know some people, so your friends probably went to eton and got some connections or something like that. For us lonely peasants we have to work hard for our salaries.

Based on my experience, working at some no name accountcy firm or one of the top 10 in the country, you might see a few extra thousand a year but nothing realy in line with the preportion of the size of the company that you work for. That is why small firms are often better for IT because you get paid the same and do less work.

These big firms have more staff members per IT support person and they definitely don't pay better.

But you are comparing apples and oranges. some telecoms support person and some IT support person are two different jobs. Telecoms support is like customer support and goldman sachs support would more technical etc.

Ill repeat, i have no problems with my job, i am not in need of personal job assistance of any kind. I am talking about IT in general.

a) why? Do you do harder work at a better business? No, they just employ more of you to share the load, what you do is exactly the same as at a small company though. Do you honestly think cleaners get paid more at Goldman Sachs than they do at a co-op?

b) You don't contribute though. You've been sat on this website not working but instead bitching about your colleagues.

I do think cleaners get paid more at goldman sachs than at co op and I do think that IT contributes a hell of a lot more to service delivery and the business as whole than cleaners.

A lot of IT roles are still overvalued in therms of salary if you ask me. A hangover from the days when you had to pay to get the limited talent that was out there. Now everybody thinks they can do "systems admin" and get 35k or more. There are some jobs in IT that do demand a high salary but a lot don't and are filled by people like the OP that moan that because they work in IT they should be on megabucks. Well that isn't the case. You are easily replaceable and somebody will probably do it for less money.

The second problem is IT is only really a business expense. Like another poster said its like the photocopier or the coffee machine. IT at our place costs a small fortune each year (millions) and provides no revenue.

I work in IT. My salary isn't half bad but I know that I can be replaced by somebody who will do the Jon cheaper and that nobody from top. Tass sees IT as anything other than an expense they can't avoid.

Yea i am aware that IT is seen as an expense, but the point of this thread was to kind of try and point out that IT has become more than an expense and thus is under valued and under paid.

Your attitude towards employment has consistently shown itself to be absolutely dire at best. You are virtually unemployable!

I remember you posting a thread about your consistent lateness and being shocked they were taking you to task about it. You should consider yourself lucky to have a job rather than whinge about how "unfair" your wage is.

I do not consider myself lucky to have a job and won't just bend over take **** like you do. The thread about lateness was a bit of a **** take after a few pages. But yea if you want to try and turn this discussion in to a personal discussion about my work ethic and abilities then fill your boots.

I do work hard to improve my pay bracket and I have done so. How many times I have had to say that is not about me but about IT in general.

I think I do a lot more than reboot a few computers. My point seems lost here because all of you fail to see a bigger context and try to make it personal. I give up.

edit: the reason I don't feel lucky to have my job is because I have worked hard to get where i am and did not get here because i know people or went to a special school.

There are still smart ways to work in IT. When I first started, I was very motivated - but not necessarily in IT. I remember thinking I could do IT, and it was pretty interesting, but how do you make real money? I mean, real money and value comes with sales doesn't it?

So, I chose to go to work for specialised IT Resellers/Consultancies and made sure I kept my skills current and specialised. This worked for me.

To say there's no money in IT isn't right. There's no money in some parts of IT true enough.

The idea that companies see IT as an outright expense also seems to be changing. Certainly in the larger companies I work with/at. They're trying to use IT to gain competitive advantage, and that can only be a positive for the industry as a whole.

Do you mind me asking how old you are Groen?

Well thank you for a reasonable response. I am 28 next week. I am grateful for my job and I am not expecting ridiculous salaries. My point was that these companies that are seriously raking in the money do not appreciate their IT staff as much as I think they should. That is all i was trying to point out. This morning I came across a salaries.xls, while fixing a slow login issue  This is what kicked me off, after seeing all the salaries of all the people that I work with, that day to day, do hardly any work. No doubt they have worked hard to get there and probably spent a few years printing documents and making coffee etc. But I don't have a problem with their salaries or the fact that they make loads of money. I just think that if someone is earning £300k a year and they work in a company where there is only 20 employees, they should pay their IT staff and everyone else on a reasonable salary. I can't even afford to buy new shoes (yea cry me a river) but these guys look at my shoes in disgust, but i feel like saying, hey if i earned what you earn in a year in a month, i promise you, you would see your arrogant face in my shoes reflection.
