There are two main kinds of storage buses used in computers, they are PATA and SATA.
Parallel and Serial Advanced Attachment Technology, respectively.
Parallel ATA runs from 3.3MB/s to 133MB/s.
Serial ATA runs from 150MB/s to 300MB/s.
PATA uses the ribbon or rounded cables with 40 pin connecters for devices, whilst SATA uses much thinner ribbon cables with 7 pin connectors for devices.
Simply evolutionary technologies.
Also, don't be confused by UDMA devices, they're just a type of PATA drive that allows higher throughput (ATA66, 100 and 133 are UDMA).
