differnce between DVI and HDMI?

At the moment i use 1920*1020 with DVI I can use HDMI is there any point in changing the cable?

think one of the only differences is that hdmi brings audio aswell as video, not sure about difference in quality though as ive only ever had VGA monitors

The only reason to use HDMI would be to send audio and video on one cable. No difference otherwise.

You can send audio over DVI.

HDMI has MUCH higher bandwidth, however. Useful for 30" monitors I suppose although I'm too poor to have any first-hand info on that.

isnt that the other way round hdmi can send audio but dvi has bigger bandwidth for 2560x1600 resolution etc

That's what I thought too.

I thought 1080p was the limit resolution wise (or pretty damn close) for HDMI.

neither.

HDMI has higher bandwidth (10.2gb vs 7.9 for dual link dvi) and can send audio as well. hdmi can send up to 2560x1600 @ 75hz. so 30% higher bandwidth - not really much much more lol.

dvi the standard does not carry audio. adapted dvi sockets can carry audio, with the help from a specifially designed dvi > hdmi convertor.

How do you carry sound over DVI?? Do you mean for speakers built-in to monitor?

I have a 4870 and use on-board sound sound, would be great if I could use the sound on graphics card.

Graphics cards can wire audio to pins on the dvi connector block that can then be used with a sutiable dvi to hdmi converter (ati) or cable (nvidia) to carry the audio to an HDMI destination.

AFAIK dvi source to dvi destination is not audio capable, its not something thats in the dvi standard for montiors or tv's to follow.

zero difference. unless your monitor handles hdmi and dvi differently.
