You can send audio over DVI.
HDMI has MUCH higher bandwidth, however. Useful for 30" monitors I suppose although I'm too poor to have any first-hand info on that.
Graphics cards can wire audio to pins on the dvi connector block that can then be used with a sutiable dvi to hdmi converter (ati) or cable (nvidia) to carry the audio to an HDMI destination.
AFAIK dvi source to dvi destination is not audio capable, its not something thats in the dvi standard for montiors or tv's to follow.
