I was wondering as I read up on some blog that Apple was qq'ing on people doing self upgrades so wanted to ask is it quite simple to install a second hard drive and ram on to a 27" iMac? Doesn't screw up with the Applecare stuff?

It depends on the year. If I remember correctly, on the latest iMacs, the HDD SATA wire has been changed from a universal to proprietary connector which means HDD temp monitoring and control is now done through firmware on the drive itself instead of sending the signal to the SMC or whatever that usually carries out that function on older models.

Just googled while I was typing the above out: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/14/imac_hard_drive_replacement_woes/

RAM upgrading should still be possible via the door/panel in the bottom of the monitor. But for an HDD upgrade (if it is a newer model) you'll probably have to take it to Apple or a certified repairer/retailer so you can get a drive that will pass the AHT, have the onboard firmware and use the proprietary cable connector. RAM upgrading won't affect your Apple Care as it's still considered "user serviceable".

In short, it's a completely scumbag move on Apples part. I'm sure the number of people upgrading HDDs in iMacs or other machines themselves is a minuscule percentage of their overall user base, so they've shafted them good and proper.

What's the driver for the second hard drive? More space? If so a Firewire external unit will be easier.

If you want to fit an SSD you can - it's fiddly but not impossible.
