Digital Britain (including Labour's proposal for a £20/year internet connection TAX)

BT are already massively developing the broadband infrastructure across Britain with 21CN.

Isn't that, basically, just ADSL2+? And a repositioning of its wholesale/commercial packages to focus more on VoIP rather than analog PSTN lines?

21CN is not coming to 'rural' exchanges for years, some don't even have a date set.
All it does is enable them to offer the same ADSL2+ speeds that LLU providers can now.

How bizarre. Good, but bizarre. I cant get more than 1Mbit where I live, are they suggesting that ISP's and Telcos be legally obligated to spend a small fortune increasing the amount of porn I can download?

How very strange.

Ah plymouth, so out of the way even Virgin can't provide a speed of more than 1Mbit...(yet still charge you for 20...):(

If they want to charge a £20 tax then we should be able to download what we want, think of it as a subscription to music and film companies. (There are already some around). The £20 tax is probably going to be the only thing that comes of any of this.

If they charged every single person in the UK a one-off £20 to upgrade to a fibre network, they could raise (roughly) £1,218,878,240 (1.2 billion).

It's wishful thinking, but I'd pay for it.

Virgin don't serve my area at all, yet every week I get another spam leaflet from them telling me how amazing they are.

You're lucky then, as you probably have a faster connection over ADSL.

what, they where serving 4mb 6 years ago

They seem to have gone backwards.

Last year we had a 4Mb connection and it was pretty constant at 4Mb, this year we ugraded to 20Mb and get barely 1Mb if we're lucky. I've had a thread on here about the problem but it turns out it's not my end, it's the entire area as i've spoken to others who have got the same problem. VM seem to know about the problem but apparently don't know how to fix it (acording to the guys on ADSLguide)...

It annoys me that no matter what speed you actually get from your package with the ISP, you still pay the same price. I was with BT last year and I was paying for the 8Mb package, but barely getting 6Mb.

They should adjust the prices according to what speed you are getting.

Yeah my mate has a problem with that in Bristol. Men at to be 20mb, but due to some error is getting about 8mb. They know what's wrong and said it should be fixed within about 3 months. 9months latter it's still not fixed.

He keeps complaining and forcing them to give him discounts most months.

Yes!! Paying the same as someone who gets 10x my speed doesn't seem right.

After all, they could download more in a day than I could in a month :(:o

Think they said 2Mbit would be the "legal minimum" or something.

They were talking about involving the mobile networks so that BT wasn't bearing the whole cost. Can't make up their mind much?

That would be hard to do when the wholesale model for the majority of ISPs is based on a fixed constant charge, regardless of connection speed, and aggregated bandwidth to connect the ISP to BT Wholesale's network.

The internet connection tax proposal is absolutely ridiculous. I don't see how they can justify taxing access to something they add nothing to (at least a TV licence goes towards the BBC.) Expecting BT to fork out for the fibre infrastructure then demand the other ISPs get to use it is also ridiculous. It's a tough situation that the main high-speed network of a country would be privately owned, but you cannot expect them to shell out all the money to no advantage.

Off-topic: I've got no problems with VM in Plymouth. Have been getting a steady 9.8 - 10Mbps connection since they made the upgrade.

Unless they are going to also charge children and babies I don't think that's going to happen. ;)

The best you could hope for is every household with broadband, which would raise less than 1/5 of that figure.

What kind of primitive savage came up with the idea of an internet tax?

Probably the same idiots who came up with the new "extreme" porn laws, the people in government don't live in the real world.

Why didnt BT just use the same fibre optics as cable companies last time they relaid cables now they are gonna need to do a load again.

As been said, GPO/BT had/has no real need to lay new cables let alone fibre. Also don't forget that the whole cable infrastructure for NTL/Telewest pretty much bankrupted them.

Telewest experienced many financial problems due to huge debts incurred as a result of constructing its cable network and of acquiring other cable companies and assets. In 2004 Telewest re-structured itself by swapping its unsecured debt for 98.5% of its shares.

Meanwhile out in Africa in some mud hut, theres a guy ******* himself laughing at our dial up speeds, as he's been getting 50,000mb for the past 20 years, with no ******* restrictions at all.

This government is awesome. Hug the headlines as the great broadband crusaders, wont be spending one penny, but infact will be stealing £20 a year as a privilege. Cheers Gordon great idea like all the others. :)

Still least no more boom and bust eh? oh wait........ :o

Yet again the only thing the Government can come up with is a TAX, no matter what it is lets TAX it. £20 isn't much but for many people on a fixed income it's a huge sum and who believes that once they start it just won't stop.

I really don't think we should stand for this after all we do pay TAX on it now it's called VAT.
