In a digital camera of £100 quality, which is better, a Sony Cybershot 7.2mp with 4x Optical Zoom, or a Samsung 12mp with 3x Optical Zoom?

I've been told that unless I'm planning on doing big prints that 6mp is enough, but I'm not sure which to go for?

Any advice much appreciated.

Definitely the Sony.

In my experience, I've found Samsungs not to have that good an IQ.

7.2MP is plenty unless you're someone who prints large posters or something.

Nope, I just plan on taking some snaps and putting them on the computer.

Skyfall recommended the camera to me and his blog has some really nice photos taken with it, I just wasn't sure which was better.

Thanks a bunch for the help.

Is it possible to go to your local camera shops and try both out?

A camera's as much about 'feel' as it is anything else.

Not sure - will have a look.

Incidentally, there is a model up from the Sony which is pretty much exactly the same apart from it has image stabilisation ("Super SteadyShot capability") for apparantly an extra £20. Is that worth the increase or no?

Only if you'll be using the zoom a lot, or taking a lot of pictures indoors (low light).

How much is the camera without 'SteadyShot'?

Well, I've found a price of £75 for the 7.2 without SteadyShot, about £95 for the 7.2 with SteadyShot, or £95 somewhere else for the 8.1 with SteadyShot.

All the same Sony W series, just weird pricing.

Which would you lot go for?

I'm totally new to this so I don't know how much the extra megapixels/SteadyShot is worth!

you can get the W130 for £90 delivered & imo it's probably the sweet spot but the W120 & W150 are also good vfm.
