Digital inputs not working on AV-R500

i have just bought a DK-Digital AV-R500 from the bay but with the digital inputs, no sound comes out, i have tried 3 different devices and the same thing, can the cable be at fault altho i can see the red light at the end, i sometimes hear a crackling sound when playing music so its like the signal is not getting through.
