Digital Medium Format

The only people who need that are pros' who print canvas size prints, a DSLR is fine for even A1 prints, besides i saw a comparison with a 1D with a medium format film camera a few years ago that the result is very small even when magnified. So I doubt any consumer have any use for medium format DSLR.

A1 prints from a DSLR? Which one? The full-frame 1Ds MkII maybe? Not sure my 5D would look great at A1+.

As far as I know there's nobody on here got a digital MF so we can't genuinely say whether A1 prints would be better or not.

However, on the basis that some that people advocate going for the larger full frame cameras (instead of crop sensors) for better image/print quality you'd have to assume the same applies going from full frame to 48ish mm. Whether or not it's enough to justify the price tag is another question.

Like Fstop11, my 20D and 1DMkII both give excellent A2 prints. Pushing it to A1 might just be acceptable but it depends on how demanding you are.

You can use it for whatever you like, they're for people who want the best and are prepared to pay for it. Bear in mind though they don't generally handle anything like a SLR, depending on what sort of subjects it's for it may not be the best choice.

Hasselblad are doing a kit version as well ;)

my 8.2mp 30D shows fantastic results at A2. A1 wouldnt be out of the question.

Hassys would be used for billbord imagary.

Besides its really an indoor camera.

a 5D with a Full frame sensor and higher pixel count should and could do A1 easy enough.

I've just had a look at gthe price of the thing in kit form
I'd imagine that in that price bracket it would only be used by pros for billboard work and whatnot, a better compromise for the average user would be a Canon 1Ds MkII. I haven't used one myself but I've seen some large prints from it and A1 size wouldn't be a problem at all.

But the Hasselblad carries bragging rights that would far outweigh most other cameras. Go on, you know you want to ;)

A1 = 33"x23" roughly.

Photobox do 30"x20"

I have several perfectly good prints at that size from my 6MP APS-C D70

...I'd be incredibly surprised if a 12.8MP FF 5D couldn't quite easily outdo the quality of that. No real need for a 39MP MF camera unless you're doing prints measuring in multiple metres as opposed to inches.

I've got a 30x20 print from photobox that looks excellent. It looked very impressive even when I was holding it up in my hands and looks even better on the wall. Its a shot taken with my old D200, so I have no doubt whatsoever that my D2x will easily go beyond A1 before any need to scale the image up.

What resolution was the 30x20 print? And how much did it set you back if you don't mind me asking?

Oooo, that would be fun playing with one of those!

I think your 5d would be perfectly capable of printing A1 size to a high quality, especially when used with good quality lens. You might possible want to look into the point at which diffraction starts to soften your pictures (high apertures) to help you keep a sharp image but apart from that I'd say you were good to go already. :)

If you want higher resolution anyway I'd look to the 1ds series, + there's a rumor (isn't there always?!?) of a new top end canon being released this year...

Don't do it Spie! :D

Looks rather impressive though. I know the stupendous resolution makes a big difference, but how much of a difference?

I was talking to a friend who'd read an article by Andy Rouse. He compared two billboard sized enlargements. One from a film camera he'd taken, and one shot he'd taken using his 1D mk2. The differences were negligable apparently.

Hmmmmm...
