Digital Medium Format

got to disagree with those saying they're only useful for people preparing billboards etc.
Yeah but at £20k, is it really worth the price tag for a non-pro? Is it £16,000 better than a Canon 1Ds MkII?

From what I've seen the average price is around £17k + VAT, body only which equates to about £20k. The lenses seem to average about £1500+ VAT each as well.

But, I suppose if you can afford it then why not

I was expecting a 8-10k price tag max. Surely at 20k there has to be a considerable difference between a £2k mkII and a hassy when printing on A1 for example. Otherwise people just wouldn't buy them except as people mentioned above, for billboards etc. Is that the only, or the best medium format?

A hasselblad is arguably the finest engineered camera there is. For examples of the work by those using them have a look in here. I couldn't find anyone using the H3D but the variety is enormous

Either way it's hardly a suitable camera for holiday snaps and family album pics is it?

Unless you're a professional you won't really be getting much more out of a £20k hasselblad than you will a £1k 5D

The normal question we get is "should I upgrade my 300D for a 30D?" In terms of image quality 99% of the time you can't tell the difference but we always say it's built better, quality is better etc.

I don't really see the difference here other than the level of cost and in this case it's affordable for the OP. The advice given up till now is generally that he won't see the difference in quality between a 5D/1DS MkII and the H3D. 99% of the time I'd agree, for A1 I'm not sure :)

As you say though, as an amateur I'd be asking myself if it was a worthwhile purchase to cover the occasional time you wanted an A1 print.

I said they are used for billboard sized work. They are also used for portraits. etc etc

At the end of the day. I, like many others stated that there is very little point to pay 20k for a camera (and a very limiting camera at that! a hassy is very specific to do its job) just to print A1 size

A HD3 is hardly a pick up and go camera. It has very in depth specific color/tonal settings that must be mastered.

A 5D is plenty enough with a prime stuck to it. If you feel the need to spend. 1Ds Mark II.

Thanks for the comments folks but this was my opening post :-

Probably better off trying a proper photography forum where you'll more likely get some professionals who use them then really.
