remote release is pointless if he doesn't have a tripod or doesn't shoot landscapes or macro...like me. I have one on my 30D and I seldom use it, so rare to the point that i don't have on for the 5Dii.

I don't use my tripod either....

One of the online retailers (can't remember which one!) does a P-type filter starter kit for about that money. It includes a handful of filters, a holder and adapter ring (and possibly some other stuff too

). You'll need to check the filter thread diameter of your friends primary lens though
