I'm looking for a beginners digital piano and the Casio CDP-100 caught my eye as it's cheap (< £300), it's compact and it's a brand I've heard of.

Is this a good choice for a novice or can anyone suggest anything better for a similar budget?

TIA :)

Personally I'd steer away from Casio for digital pianos - I've never been impressed by them. If you can find one at the right price, a second-hand Roland RD300 or FP3 would be excellent. If not, perhaps one of the cheaper Yamahas such as the P70 or P140 might be a good option. Do you need one with speakers? What sort of music are you wanting to play on it?

Thanks Arty. There's a brand new P70 on eBay for £389 at present but without a stand.

No real need for internal speakers I guess - I'll probably use an external amp.

As for music, I think we'll be confined to twinkle twinkle, little star and jingle bells for a while ;). I haven't so much as touched a keyboard in 6 years.

I got the casio cdp100 after reading some threads on a few forums where people were raving about it for the cost. It's a lovely little piano and sounds pretty good for the price, and has a really nice weighted feel to it. You should try one out if you can cause it's a lot better than the brand name and price suggest

Ive got a full size Casio Digital piano thats 17 years old and its still running great. Im a pro musician and for the price they do their job!

Thanks guys for the input. I must admit I'm tempted by the Casio for the price...

I admit to not having played that particular model, but next time I'm in a piano shop I'll have a quick blast and see what I think if you like :p It might be worth your going to try / look at one even if you feel like a bit of a nonce.
