Its actually not that unusual for retailers to take a product out of stock, use it for promotional, testing, etc. use then put it back into stock to be sold as "new". Don't agree with it myself but its far more common than people probably think.

Its not right in any instance especially if the product is meant to be new. There were a few people on POTN who received 5d mark iiis with bodged serial numbers and had been used as they had a few actuations on them....

EDIT: Just seen what they mean.

I guess it makes sense that they sell it but they really shouldn't sell it as new.

I saw the threads on TP as well for DR and now ******* where the exif serial didn't match the camera. They both replaced the item but how many people haven't checked.....

I got a days suspension for circumventing that rule on them a few weeks ago.
Seems a weird and inconsistent rule to me but I aint a mod so what do I know.

And this is very naughty behaviour by DR imo and they should make that irritating little **** refund the customer out of his own pocket.

I think it's probably because they sell stuff that OcUK does (tablets primarily I think are the main one) rather than it being a duty dodging thing.

It might be common but it's not right. If you return certain products many stores charge a restocking fee or won't accept it because it's been opened. Why should a customer be given an item that has been opened and used as well?

The sooner all manufacturers use those "void is removed" stickers on the box the better.

The issue of the fake serial number things was supposed to go all the way back to the Supplier and their chains. It wasn't a case of Digital Rev being dodgy, and they do also appear to have offered to sort out anyone who had such a camera.

As for this new used camera issue. While I don't condone it, it's certainly something that goes on all the time. For example:

I once tried out a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 at a Jacobs store. They opened it from the box and let me try it out. I didn't actually buy one that day, but somebody did, after I'd used it.

When I had a summer job at GAME when I was a lot younger.... We are talking back in 2000, they used to let staff take home whatever they wanted for three days, play it, then bring it back and put on the shelf as new. This was a company wide official policy with a logging system to say who had what. Customers had absolutely no clue.

So all I'm trying to say is that this kind of thing must go on all the time. Also, the guy in this case is probably an extreme minority of DR customers, as they aren't using every single item they sell beforehand. It may even have been a mistake that it got sent out. I'm sure they will probably sort the guy out though.
