It has come to my attention that im going to have to invest in a Digital SLR as a present for my Mrs in about 6 months and to tell you the truth I have no idea were to start. I thought I would try to gain some prior knowledge of these camera's before I pay for something I know nothing about.

I know Canon, Olympus and Nikon make some nice camera's but I need an expert on the case! I know she will be using it for a lot of landscape shots and close up photography and I believe doing some big print outs if that helps :D.

Thanks a bunch!

In terms of brand, all the big names are fantastic and everyone will have their favourite that they argue for even if they don't really have a reason to dislike the others (damn I love Canon). You've got 6 months to find out if there's one brand she prefers :D

Define close up photography? like .. portraits? or really "close up" as in Macro?
9/10 i hear someone use the phrase close up they mean portraits, but if she wants to do macro ..

Does she have any friends/family with DSLRs? If so, it might make sense to get the same make as swapping/borrowing kit may be possible. I bought a Canon 500D, as my father-in-law has a Canon (as does my boss).

Unless it's changed recently, Canon were the larger cameras, which is the reason I went with them back in the 300D days.

Canon camera have always been small for as long as I remember, why I chose Nikon to begin with as all the 300D and 350D type cameras were unusably small. No idea these days.

small hands? strange question, but most girlies I know prefer Canon's because they have smaller grips...

Reasonably small hands, I'm thinking the Canon 550d.

Her aunty has a Olympus from like 2006. Think its pretty cheap now adays.

D3000, D5000, D3100, D5100 are much, much, much smaller then any previous or current Nikon model.

Yes they are, but the grip and position you hold them in is different to a Canon. I still prefer my 400D to newer Nikons, though the difference is less these days...

What I'm getting at is you might see if you can get her to try a few cameras first. Don't know how you'd go about it but she is your gf!

600D would be better, articulated screen etc.

Grab a friend .. tell him he IS looking to buy an SLR .. go with and take GF "just for the trip"

Give friend the cash .. get him to 'try' various entry level models ..
Casually go "Oh, what do you think?" *Pass camera to GF*

etc etc ..

Friend buys with your cash .. collect it behind GF's back .. job done ;)

It worked for me anyway :p
