Dilema! Dell 2407WFP or BenQ FP241W?

Ok, so I need a new monitor. I was originally going to get the Dell 2407WFP, it's specifications appeal to me and the price is right imo. However, i have noticed that the BenQ FP241W will be out soon. It seems the only major difference in specification is that the BenQ is HD ready (1080p). What I'd like to know is: Is HD readiness really worth waiting for? My new pc build is imminent

Thanks.

Firstly to clarify they're both HD ready, just the BenQ also supports 1080p in addition to the lower but more common output standards.

Did you plan on owning any 1080p devices that would feed the screen is really the question. And even if you did would you use this for those rather than say a dedicated HDTV.

With the BenQ I think the thing worth waiting for is the chance of a better gaming panel. However the release date has slipped and slipped and stock of these seems to be as rare as rocking horse poop.

The Dell is tried, tested, loved and hated and available right now. No it won't do 1080p but 720p/1080i (much more common and realistic hd output standards) are possible from my understanding.

Decide what you want the screen for, and when you want it as those two things only you can answer.

Thanks for the reply :)

I'm only going to use the screen for gaming, desktop work, and i might connect my PS2 to it. It's going to be hooked up to an Nvidia 8800GTX, so i'd prefer to get the best monitor to compliment that really. I would prefer to get the BenQ really, i was kinda wondering if the Dell still had a case. And i can definately wait for the BenQ, I have seen that the 'revised' release date for the UK is the 22/11/2006

10 quid says the bloody thing gets pushed back AGAIN!

I've been torn for nearly 2 months myself. The Dell was incredibly tempting when the price was in the 500 range, but now it's back up to 700 the BenQ is much more appealing.
Having used and loved a 2407 knowing that the BenQ has a better screen makes waiting a little less painfull.

I just wish the Z version of the BenQ had some kind of release date, as from the sounds of it this is something deffinately worth waiting for.

Couldn't have put it better myself...... I'm in exactly the same position. I almost crumbled at the £500 dell price but @ £700 - forget it...

No competitor talk please! I'm getting peeved now. If you look at the dell and compare it to the benq, there is next to no difference. Yeah, the BenQ has and HDMI port, but i'm not going to use that feature, I'd use the card reader of the Dell more (trivial though it is in the spectrum of things here) Basically, if the BenQ isn't available by the time my system is ready to build, i'm going to get the Dell. Anyone think i'm doing the wrong thing here?

I'd have backed you if the Dell was back at it's previous price... but now it's more expensive than the BenQ... and the BenQ will at least work fine for PC HD content when Vista arrives whereas the Dell one simply won't be compatable with the new technology.
At it's previous price the Dell was tempting, at it's current price... I'd rather wait.

I sent an email to BenQ last week and they said that overclockers would be getting stock this week and that I should call overclockers to find out the exact date but to me that makes no sense as surely BenQ UK would know when the monitors would be shipped to arrive at OCUK .

Over at [H] forums they have all been getting mails stating that a 1:1 pixel mapping firmware would be released in mid-december and that could account for the hold up.

I really hope it's true, but I doubt it :(

Not at all, I nearly click buy on the 2407 every day.

However, comparing paper stats for the two (or for any screens) really isn't fair to your self. Don't use the fact that there is little (on paper) difference between the two to convince you to buy the Dell. Use the fact that the BenQ is a complete ******* with shipping date and not wanting to wait even longer heh.

The Vista HDCP problem on the Dell isn't enough to worry me personally, my pc plays games and surfs the net.

And with regards to buying the Dell or any monitor elsewhere, no thank you.

You keep screens typically the longest as they travel from upgrade to upgrade and making use of the full 4 year warranty is easily done, if you talk to the other places you've seen this screen for sale and ask about their warranty specifically you'll find that you have to go through that seller for warranty stuff. They may seem trustworthy (and I even have friends who have used them) but as another forum member put it excellently in another (since deleted) post, what if he gets run over tomorrow?

Trust and reliability are just two different things on that front and that's why I'd go through OCUK as always.

All I can say is I took delivery of a Dell 2407 on Tuesday and it's great :)

Not had a problem with ghosting or other nasties in any of the games I've tried so far - not that I've tried may - just having the ability to play something like Far Cry at 1920 stops me experimenting - I'm too busy playing.
I swapped from a 21 inch CRT so I'm used to a decent sized display (my old Dell CRT was losing it's contrast or I'd have stuck with it).

My only critiscm is is that I can see the texture of the screen when looking at large pictures but this is being hyper critical - i can't see any banding or back light leakage but to be honest I'm not looking for it - if it's not obvious or affecting me straight off I'm not gonna obsess over looking for it. There are no dead or lazy pixels that i can tell and therfore I'm a happy bunny :)

My advice is the same as people always used to say about upgrading pcs components- buy the best you can now cause there'll always be something new arriving tomorrow - if you wait for the ultimate you'll never buy anything.
Better jam today than jam tomorrow or in the case of the Benq jam possibly tomorrow.

guys, please remember, no discussion of competitor pricing and anything else for that matter is allowed. I dont want to have to close this thread, but will have to if this continues as above.

Thanks

Since you just came from a CRT, do you mind if I ask how noticable the tearing is compared to your old monitor?

i have a 22" iiyama 514pro - working fine but 3years old - still not sure about the move over to tft..

know its going 2 happen soon my budget would be no more than £600.00 so a bit of choice but needs to be big to make up for the crt22"

dell has had some love hate topics my friend has one and look great still unsure what to get :(

Hi Duffman,

Have to say I haven't noticed any tearing at all - however, I have to add that I've spent most of this week playing a beta game with extremely detailed graphics so my framerates haven't been that high - however, i did fire up Far Cry and played through the first chapter at 1920 and it was as smooth as silk - didn't notice any tearing or other problems.

LOL how you hate to hear that other places are cheaper.

i don't personally have any objection to it at all, I don't work for OcUK only help moderate their forums in my spare time. As a moderator I have to enforce the rules of this forum which is what you agreed to when signing up for access. Only doing my job guv :)
