I recently bought a 2nd hand HTC desire (approx 2 months ago) to replace a blackberry that died. Despite having fitted a brand new battery, I'm lucky to get 12 hours out of it if I don't use much, 6-8 if I use it a lot. Not ideal as I work 12 hour shifts and it's difficult to keep charging it when on call (not in a vehicle either).

So, I'm reluctantly considering the sheep following iphone as I'm told by the worshippers the battery life is excellent in comparison, or is there an Android based phone that can last at least 16 hours with a bit of use?

Look forward to all the comments :)

SGS2 especially with the extended battery (2000mah). Im currently sitting at 30% battery left after 36 hours with roughly 3 hours display on and that's not even as good as it could be.

The battery in my Monte Carlo seems to last forever compared to my Desire.

IPhone 4 was supposedly long lasting on battery, the 4s though seems to be not as good though I don't know if will be as bad as what you are currently getting.

get APNDROID
and use it to dsiable GPRS/EDGE/3G you can have it as a widget so its easy to turn them off and on.
get wifi switch and add the widget so you can tap it to turn wifi on/off.

i get around 16 hours of light use out of my monte carlo

A spare battery is an option, one which I've thought about, and tried a few times. Trouble is, I don't have enough pockets!

I've never come across the Monte Carlo. I'll have a look at that one. The Galaxy S2 is also an option, but probably a bit out of my budget...

It is better to keep extra battery pack or charger along with you. No Android or iPhone handsets offer long battery back-ups no matter which features they offer. Additional features always drain the battery to a greater extent. Following battery saving tips may help you to some extent.

brilliant phone for the money, i bought mine just before christmas when they were still 129 :@

I don't know why people are recommending the Monte Carlo, its got the same capacity battery as the Desire, but less ram and a slower CPU. I'd either pick up a second battery or an extended battery, or get an app that will turn off wifi/data when you're not using it. You could also try undervolting it..My girlfriends Desire lasts about 24 hours with light use :)

I've got an App killer on it, which doesn't seem to make ma lot of difference. I turn off wifi when not in use but to be honest, I'm done with tweaking gadgets. All I want is a decent phone with a decent battery life out of the box. I don't really want to start messing about with syncing and Roms. Been there before and caused me more trouble than it was worth (getting old and grumpy now!)

You're considering the iPhone but the Galaxy S II is too expensive? You might want to check your calculator again.

It's also worth noting that people have battery problems with the new iPhone, it's well documented in many forums even the Apple ones here. I would say a lot of new phones have a better battery compared to the original Desire, but with the newest version of Gingerbread etc, it should be comparable to an iPhone.

App killers are detrimental to your battery life! They kill tasks, so when you access it again, you're using more CPU cycles instead of grabbing it from memory. The way Android is designed, you should let them stay in memory (unless it's a rogue app).

Just read around :)

I know the Galaxy price is comparable to the iphone 4/4s but would be happy with a 3gs if the battery is significantly better.

Didn't realise that about the App killers!

Will be having a good read round I think. Who would think buying a phone would be so complicated with so much choice?!

I get 40-60h on my SGS with CM9.

3G causes the most battery drain from my experience.

Try Juice Defender and disabling 3G/GPS/Wifi, Bluetooth when not needed.

I can only think of 2 popular android phones that can struggle to last a day though medium usage, both made by HTC and you have one of them and the other being the Desire HD. A SGS2 for example will easily last 2 days with light usage.

IPhone of you've got the money for it. My 4 and 4s had far far superior battery life to what i get out of my sgs2

The 4S battery usage far far superior is straight up wrong, use any type of location based reminder or alarm or play games and the phone won't last a day. There are lots of people in the iPhone4S thread complaining that their phone doe'snt last 12 hours.
