I am already the owner of a lovely white MacBook which I have had for 18 months, 1.83ghz, 2gig ram, 60gig hdd.

My dad would like a MacBook too, for occasional office use when hes travelling so wants to take mine off me and will give me the £600 it would have cost for a new MacBook, now do I just buy a new basic white one, 2.1ghz, i'll put in my 2gb ram, 120gb hdd or do I put in an extra £500 and get an Air?

I think the lack of optical will annoy me as it will be my only machine though....

Another possible avenue is that my younger sister will be going to uni in september and was wanting a MacBook too, so shall I just get a White 2.1ghz one, give this to her at end of September and then look at my options again?

I'd love to get a new updated MacBook but I fear that it will be out come December/January 2009 and i'll be without a laptop for a few months?

edit: or a MacBook Pro?! Is it much bigger than the MacBook for lugging around in my bag?

Ideas?

Don't get an Air if your looking for performance.. If your looking for 'ultra portability' then go for one.

A 15" MacBook Pro isn't huge or heavy, it's perfectly fine for carrying in a bag.

If money isn't too much of an issue I would go for a MacBook Pro, also they have just been updated so there's no need to worry about new ones coming out anytime soon.

Well i've looked into it, the MBP is a bit thinner, 3.2cm wider and 1.6cm deeper, which isn't too bad. What are the likely changes to the new MacBook?

I will have roughly the same dilemma soon, I to have a White MacBook (sig) and it will be 2 years old in September (I think) I've always intended upgrading my Laptop every 2 years.

After much research I've come to the conclusion that the Macbook asn't actually changed that much over time and i am now leaning towards the 15" Pro as it seems a more capable and sleeker machine and of course it will be a visible jump from a MacBook which I think old to new MacBook won't be.

Your very lucky to be able to get that sort of money back for your MacBook, Take it and buy the basic MacBook Pro 15" + Remote then source 2GB of extra memory from somewhere.

That's what I'll be Doing ;)

What do you mean?

What are the likely changes going to be for the new MacBook? Obviously the multi gesture touch pad, but physical changes?

Aye, was thinking that, will my 2gig of ram in my MacBook work in the Pro? If so then i imagine 4gb of ram would help the machine fly! My jumps have been from 12" iBook to Macbook, so I guess the next logical change would be the Pro.

Thing is they need to keep some space between MacBook and Pro or no one will buy the Pro so I don't think the MacBook will get Multi touch or dedicated graphics anytime soon and if and when it does the Pro will have something more to offer.

The MacBook is a great introduction to Apple / OSX but ultimately the Pro is where it's at :)

You will need 2x2GB to give a Pro 4GB :)

Just been looking at the Pro on the website and it does look fantastic. Is the volume louder on those compared to the MB? I think the higher resolution will be nice as well as the sharper graphics. Does the casing get marked or damaged easily?

No, it's pretty hard to scratch.

I dropped a spoon on mine and it scratched though and a photo frame..

The volume goes pretty loud, but haven't heard a MacBook so wouldn't be able to compare.

I've not heard a Pro but i would assume Apple are using the same speaker set up in both systems.

I find the Macbook really quiet compared to other laptops. Anyone have any pics comparing the Macbook to Macbook pro side by side?

Found some

The sound on the MacBook Pro is infinitely better than the MacBook's internal speaker.

Also, the portability isn't an issue, the 15" is barely big :)

However.. I'd say go with the new MacBooks and reasses your situation in December/January.

They've recently been bumped and you'd be getting some good performance boosts from your existing one!

The issue is however, i'd be without a laptop end of september...so i'd have to think of a solution around that time, i'm hoping they will announce the new one before then maybe? What are the chances?

I still don't think the Pro is worth the extra £470 (£1300 - £830 for similar MacBook) for a slightly bigger/higher res screen, discrete graphics, multitouch pad and a few more bells and whistles. I'll be buying MacBooks for the foreseeable future.

However, if someone offered me £600 for my MacBook this changes the game slightly. I still dont think its very good value for money, but if its what you want the good price youre getting for you MacBook makes it a bit easier to drop that sort of cash.
