Dimming Power LED

Setting up an IR remote control is possible and is a nice little project. It can be a little fiddly though as they can often pick up stray IR. A DPST with a long wire perhaps.

A photodiode could be placed anywhere though.

Why not set up a photodiode set to monitor ambient light and switch the FP LEDs off and on. Should only need a few components. You could even have the light output dim based on the output of the photodiode.

Or is that going to far?

It's just that I know what I'm like and forgetting to manually switch it off, climbing into bed, getting cosy and then realising I'd left the bloody light on. Might make an interesting project for someone into electronics like me.
You could always keep a roll of this under your pillow for when you forget to stick on your eyelids - save you getting out of bed again...:D

I really think the simple ideas are the best, otherwise you need to take power from molex, then get a voltage regulator if you use ICs.
I know I could make some fancy stuff for it if I put my mind to it: flash to audio, make pretty patterns or turn off by swearing at it xD but most of the time there will be an unexpected consequence that will really annoy me.

If your really that fussy, use a 10k potentiometer with a big fat handle.

Chucking a spare book/jumper/underwear/toilet-roll/pizza-slice over it if you want to be lazy.

TBH, so much electricity gets wasted by people leaving their PC on all the time... File sharing and automatic scans don't even justify it.
