So just had a letter from some debt collection monkeys in regards to the gas supply. (nothing to do with me- they are querying 2005). It was just addressed to "The Occupier".

Now the letter has got me a bit riled- there is no Dear Sir/ Madam or anything- it just basically states I need to contact them on an 0870 number and give them some info- it finishes with a sentence in bold stating that they will send someone 'round if I do not contact them...

Why the hell should I call an 0870 number at my own expense to give them information when they write such rude letters? Where do these guys get off?

I am thinking of writing to them, withdrawing implied right of access and then seeing what happens- if they had given me a geographical or free number to call and written a halfway- polite letter, I would call them, but I get so annoyed at the way people conduct business sometimes.

Anyone else had experiences with them?

Really? I assume they do that so you open the letter- as the current owner of the debt or whatever may have moved out- hence I would never open....

The Occupier bit sounds a bit dodgy - debt collection agencies should address an individual, not hope to get lucky with who ever the 'occupier' is.

They can'e bring any sort of proceedings against you if they don't know your name, surely!

I'd ignore the letter and if they do send some monkeys round, don't open the door, tell them that you aren't who they think you are and call the police if they persist.

Just ignore them, or inform them you don't know what they're talking about. If they persist, you can begin playing with them. For example, write informing them their common law inferred right of entry to your front door (via your property) is revoked. If they send any 'agents' around regarding the 'debt' you'll be ejecting them and bringing action for trespass.

The debt isn't yours and isn't anything to do with the people in your household, hence any further threats or requests for payment will be upsetting to you. As such, they will be construed as harassment under the Administration of Justice Act 1979 and The Protection From Harassment Act. Again, you will be only too happy to take action accordingly.

Then just ignore everything they say or do. A quick complaint to the OFT will suffice if they really don't take the hint. Oh, and be sure to include in your one-off, recorded delivery letter that since this is nothing to do with you, any further correspondence you are forced to enter into will incur a service and admin fee for £30, which they accept by entering into any further correspondence with you. Invoice for any calls and/or letters as necessary, and then enforce non-payment via the courts as required; remembering to add 8% interest as per s69 of the County Courts Act.

I do like playing with these companies. :) Oh and IANAL.
