Howdy

I don't know intel very well but I have an old dell optiplex (i think its a gx570?) in my workroom which is currently running a pentium 4 HT processor and it's getting abit slow (maxing out).
Could anyone please suggest a more modern replacement that I could drop straight in without flashing etc? Maybe a core 2 duo or something cheap and cheerful?
Currently running windows 7


Any help appreciated :)

Ok in regards to the get rid comments, this is purely my office pc I use for paperwork and now and again, photo Processing,
I already have a pretty respectably spec'ed gaming pc so have no intention of replacing this one, I'm purely asking if the CPU can be upgraded to make it a bit quicker as I've seen this done with other dells in the past.

CPU-Z will tell you what CPU and Mobo you have under the bonnet.

The nearest real Dell would be a GX520.

If it is, and it's a very late version, there's a chance it'll take a Pentium D.

The machine's service tag would allow anyone that's interested to see what the machine actually is.

We appreciate this mate, but it's very old tech you're talking about. The odds are that that system simply will not support a newer CPU than it has... Intel have a habit of changing their motherboard sockets every year or so and relegating everything to un-upgradeable status.

That's true, but the OEMs often use a single base motherboard for multiple systems with different processors.
 
We've sadly got hundreds of GX520s at work (being thrown out in a couple of weeks, gladly). You should be able to put a Pentium D in there, but I'd check the motherboard layout. It's basically a GX280 in small form factor, so they stripped out some stuff from the motherboards (at least the early revisions). These guys seem to suggest that a D 940 runs fine on revision A01 boards, though.

This is all assuming it actually is a 520 though. :P
